Free remote [secure] file backup service anyone? Mozy [Berkeley Data Systems, Inc.] is offering just that. You download a client side file management utility [Windows XP] and select the filetypes that you want Mozy to monitor for data backups. Simple right?

Mozy is a secure, automatic remote backup and archiving service for any PC in any home or office. It’s simple to install and configure. No external hard drive, expensive subscription services, CD or DVD’s to burn. All you need is a broadband connection and you are ready to go!

But what about security? File size limitations? Mozy is proposing to offer the following:

  • 1GB of backup storage, or 2GB if you fill out our survey
  • Block-level differential backup
  • Open File support
  • 128-bit SSL Support (to secure your data during transport)
  • 448-bit Blowfish Encryption (to secure your data on our server)

So what’s the catch? In order for Mozy to support its service, users must agree to accept email advertisements [read spam] for services which Mozy believes beneficial for users.

Stay tuned for a “long-term” test of the service. I decided to submit a few survey details for the optional storage limit increase to 2GB. I’m almost certain the survey results will be utilized for more “focused” spam.

Do you really want the keys to your backup being sent to a free e-mail account that uses no password whatsoever?

After reading a recent review and recommendation on Mozy, I decided to go with Mozy for my backup needs. Since I needed 10GB of backup I went with the $29.95 plan for a year. After downloading the software and setting it up I started the backup. Six days later the backup was still incomplete and was plaqued with several error messages. That’s right, six days to back up 10 GB. And this with a 3 MB broadband connection. I finally decided this service wasn’t for me. Six days to do a backup that would take just minutes locally is outrageous. I contacted Mozy and expressed my disatisfaction with the service and requested a refund. I was pointedly told “No Way”. Their standpoint is I should have tried the free service first before advancing to the pay service. There’s some advice I wished I’d taken. Bottom line, this service is way too slow and is unreliable. To top things off, their customer service is unfriendly to say the least. I recommend a local lan or external hardrive for backups. I don not recommend Mozy except for small backups and if you have plenty of time.

The refund issue has been amicably resolved.

You can take a look at IDrive-E. What is special about IDrive-E? You can back up 2GB of data free with no limits on upload size. You can backup any type of files. IDrive-E does incremental backups that transfer only portions of file that have been changed since the last backup. You can also grab unlimited backups for just $4.95/month or $49.50 for a year (and get 2 months free!).

IDrive-E efficiently uses your Internet bandwidth by compressing the data files during transmission. IDrive-E encrypts data twice before it is sent from the user’s computer. The data is first encrypted with a private encryption key stored on the user’s computer. Then 128-bit SSL (the same protocol your web browser uses for secure web transactions) is used to transmit all data to and from our servers.

The application has IDrive-E Classic interface a Windows explorer like interface to backup and restore files and folders, schedule your backup for a future data and time, exclude files and folders from backups and delete files and folders in the IDrive-E account. You have multiple options for backing up data: backups can be performed immediately or they can be scheduled for a specific time to occur every day.

The IDrive-E Explorer view is meant for restoring files and folders and is not for backups. You can browse your IDrive-E account contents, restore files and folders with a simple drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste operation, view history of files, drag-and-drop or copy files to local drive (restore file versions) and search for files and folders backed up in your IDrive-E account.
