As a follow-up post to DDHG.

As social network web services proliferate to cover every facet of our personal lives, we’re witnessing a change in service focus from the positive to the negative. While the majority of networking services promote the creation of new relationships, DontDateHimGirl.com focuses on the cheating husband / spouse / boyfriend and destroying the male reputation. When relationships falter, the immediate reaction is to seek protection; solace from the pain. What better way to “lick the wounds” (so to speak) than to bad mouth the ex?

DontDateHimGirl.com is a “a free service that allows sisters to share their experiences with cheating men by posting pictures and other information about them in an easy-to-use, searchable database.” Created by Tasha Joseph and based out of Miami, FL, the service allows women to email stories of infidelity to warn others of their cheating partners.

While the basic concept of the service seems innocent enough, the actual repercussions of posting confidential and possibly defaming material about another individual without their consent is abhorrent. These women, however just their actions may be, are utilizing smear tactics to damage the reputation of men around the world. While the Internet allows just about anyone to post content of any subject, the underlying intent of DDHG (DontDateHimGirl) is to purposely attack the integrity of possibly innocent individuals. All of this based off emails received from possibly disgruntled or bitter ex-girlfriends. The service may claim an honest intent to protect women from cheating men. However, how honest can services like DDHG be if they’re run by, monitored, and dedicated for women? Biased? One-sided?

Take for example the story of Jeff Halvosa. After numerous correspondences, it was obvious of his deep distrust and anger towards the DDHG service. Concerning his discovery of DDHG after a recent breakup “[...] as vindication, she posted my picture and full name on this site without my permission and made up a story / stories about me that are groundless and unconscionable. My integrity is so important to me. I sacrifice a lot to keep it intact. I can’t explain how hurtful it has been to see this posting of myself, without any substance to what is portrayed or any recourse on my behalf.”

Jeff vented is utter frustration with DDHG while attempting to recover his personal integrity. “Comments and accusations such as these can be damaging to say the least. With DDHG’s daily reach of 20 million readers per day, Jeff has every right to be protective of his own reputation. While attempting to make contact for content removal, Jeff realized that his emails and phone calls remained unanswered. Fortunately, after meeting with legal representation, the defaming content was removed.

Social networks abound, services similar to DDHG will most likely become a social norm for cross referencing individuals online. As the number of individuals meeting online increases, the need for reliable social background checking will most likely find itself integrated into current social networking services [read MySpace, Match, eHarmony]. In order for these types of services to flourish, the closed loop disadvantage that DDHG poses which fosters a she-said / he-said debate be replaced with an open system. A system which allows men the opportunity to post rebuttals.

If someone’s going on the roast it’s only fair that both parties have the opportunity to bite each others heads off.
