So you know you can download PhotoBooth for MacOS X, now you can download FrontRow!

You need to take the FrontRow.app file and put it in two places, your Applications folder and your Core Services folder (hardrive -> system -> library -> core services)

RESTART the computer. After you reboot, double click on the icon in the Applications folder and hold the ESCAPE key for three seconds. Vola!

Get it now [via]

Hey if you download that it lacks an icon. Download this pack http://interfacelift.com/goto.php?url=http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/downloads/1685_onemorething.zip copy the the nice little Front Row Remote then open Front Row’s “get info” Click the icon in the upper left corner. Then go to edit in your toolbar and click paste. There your all set with an attractive Front Row icon.

My Mac wont let me copy the application in the Core Services Folder. Plese Help

  3. Andy says:

I think it would be cooler if:
    1. The shortcut would work even if you were using another application
    2. You could play a DVD that is stored on your computer, like have an option that says “Open VIDEO_TS”

  4. eric says:

Giles, drag it into the folder, it’ll then ask for authentication.

  5. Gilles says:

Thank you very much eric! Your help was much appreciated.

  6. adam says:

ok so now how do I bring it up to actually use this?

  7. Carlos says:

Copied FrontRow.app to applications folder and to the core services folder, reboot machine, double clicked FrontRow in app folder, held down the escape button, nothing happens. Am i missing something?

  8. Wash_Jones says:

    Here is an alternate solution:

??This will give you a Front Row that can be provoked via hotkey anywhere within MacOSX and closed via this same hotkey….very much like dashboard and F12 are. This also seems to have no reported issues with iTunes playback, though DVD playback has not been tested. ??I’ll try to keep this simple without leaving out details some of the more n00b peoples might need. ??PLEASE FOLLOW THESE STEPS IN ORDER, AND DO NOT TRY TO RUN THE PROGRAM PRE-MATURELY. It will just likely result in nothing happening, or an applescript error that will confuse some people. Follow the tutorial through to the end and then enjoy! ??========================== ??A few pre-tutorial notes: ??If you have already placed front row.app in your applications folder but HAVE done the plist modification, this will not work exactly as desired. Download the patched front row.app again and replace your plist modded version with the downloaded one. We’ve found it works much better this way. You don’t see the ugly dock icon, and the problems with iTunes working properly seem to be gone too. ??========================== ??STEP 1. ?Download JacksonBrown’s patched Front Row STW. ??rapidshare.de/files/6669514/Front_Row__k_.zip.html ??His brilliant patching work makes Front Row run under 10.4.2 without having the iMac’s remote present. ?There are three files inside this .ZIP ?- Readme.txt you may now ignore, as it is out of date. ?- Front Row.app copy to the Applications folder ?- BezelServices.framework copy to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ ?At this point you will need to reboot your computer. ???STEP 2. ?Open Script Editor.app (located in Applications/AppleScript) and paste in the following code. ??tell application “System Events” ?tell application “Front Row” to activate ?key code 53 using {command down} ?end tell ??Once you have done this, save it as an application named openfrontrow.app in your applications folder. ???STEP 3. ?Now go to macupdate and download the program named Xkeys. It is freeware. ?Once you have the file downloaded, install it and then open it up. Inside the program, configure your F8 key to run your openfrontrow.app file you created in STEP2.???STEP 4. ?Now go into System Preferences. In the Accounts preference tab set up front row.app (the one you downloaded, NOT to be confused with openfrontrow.app that you created in STEP2) to be a login item. ???STEP 5. ?Reboot your computer. When it turns back on, press the F8 key and hopefully you will be experiencing Front Row! Pressing F8 again (or a lot of other keys on the keyboard) will close Front Row. ?
*Note* If you cant get xkeys to work for any reason, just open the script editor file you made in step 2 and click run in the upper left(ish) corner and it will run.

    -ENJOY!???*END*

Thanks to tuaw.com for original post and me for reseeding.

  9. Wash_Jones says:

    …That was odd.

It looked normal when I copy pasted… oh well. Just follow all of those steps and ignore all the ?!?!?!s.
It works great on my 1.25ghz mac mini.

  10. Dylan says:

Safari is to Firefox as FrontRow is to what?

  11. Gilles says:

Why is it important that Front Row is a login item? It works perfectly well without Front Row being a login item.

  12. Josh Sullivan says:

i can’t get the script to work. it would compile

  13. Nate says:

I can’t get it to work with iTunes, DVD’s Photos (haven’t tried videos yet)

    what should I do?
i get the menus b ut not the content…
    whats wrong?

  14. Nate says:

If you set itunes to purchased music and closw the window, front row works very well

  15. Gilles says:

I really like Wash_Jones’ idea of a well working solution, apart from the fact that the openfrontrow.app application will pop up in the Dock before Front Row wil start. Have a look at this program http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7922 Drop Script Backgrounder X 1.1 to work around that small problem.

If the script is not working is because you copied it from this page. The copied exclamation marks are the problem. Simply retype them and the script will compile just fine.

  16. Josh Sullivan says:

wow i got it all fixed up set up on F7 and everything is hidden it looks super clean the video pics and audio work haven’t tried the dvd but doesn’t seem like anyone is having any luck.

  17. Nate says:

my pics dont work, what could be wrong?

  18. Dylan says:

Is there a Windows equilivent to FrontRow?

  19. Marty Consuelez says:

I hacked the Griffin AirClick USB to control Front Row…Since there’s only 5 buttons, hold down Play longer to simulate pushing MENU. The rest is pretty easy to figure out. One thing – Fast Forward and Rewind don’t work right now, due to Front Row not being Applescript friendly. Just unzip, and run the AirClick2 program instead of your usual one. ??I don’t have hosting, so could someone mirror?

  20. Ron says:

Whenever I run the script I get:

    Applescript Error

    Disk Front Row wasn’t found.

Yet I have the app in both folders mentioned above and replaced the BezelServices.framework in my l my System/Library folder. It doesn’t work when I double click the Front Row app in Applications either.

  21. Joost says:

Is it important to copy “BezelServices.framework” To your harddisk? What is it doing on your computer?? I didn’t copy en Front Row als runs or is this the buggy iTunes updater???

Tnx for this great stuff anyway!

  22. svtjones says:

    Is this only for Tiger?

  23. Adrian says:

Hey I have install front row and everything when fine till i have tried the apple key + tab to change from apple and nothing longer works… What can I do?

  24. David says:

Help! When I run the script it just pops up for a second and does nothing. Does it matter if I coppied the Bezel to “frameworks” because there is no “privateframeworks” in my library? Please help I really want to see this work. Thanks.

  25. FunkyMonkey says:

I can’t seem to get the movie trailers and dvd’s to work. Any suggestions??

  26. MRsneezy says:

This aplication works fine on my mac mini

though it has trouble conecting to the movie trailer website
    and it is so slowwwww

but i got xkey working thanks for that tip it rox

  27. Marc says:

the itunes communication fix didn’t do anything for me. it still randomly will say that there is a communication error. i just close it restart itunes and it works. anyone else figure out how to get that to work with having to restart it everytime. thanx.

  28. Patrick says:

Hi, everything works for me except for iTunes, DVDs work, iPhoto works, Videos work. I followed the instructions including making the applescript that launches Front Row but I just can’t get iTunes to work. It either says that I have no music in my iTunes library (which is not true) or it says that an error was encountered while communicating with iTunes. Has anyone else seen this? Do the new iMacs ship with a special version of iTunes? I am using 6.0.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  29. Agentphish says:

I have gotten it to work but only for videos. Itunes wont work it says it can’t communicate with it. Photos from iphoto do load up and do a slideshow but they dont seem to be in any particular order, nor does it load in any timely fashion. Interestingly enough it seemed to freeze my machine for a while when i put a DVD-R in of a phish concert that i had. I don’t normally use the apple dvd player to view dvds so im not sure if maybe VLC opened up in the background and screwed things up.

  30. Rob says:

Front Row wont launch on my mac any one any ideas please email me or get me on ichat robertmilnes@mac.com

  31. B LOVE says:

When I launch front row, then go back to the desktop, the minimize feature for all windows is greyed out. WTF?!

  32. bob says:

i have a a updated version or FR where ther is no itunes problem it comes with the salingcliker and sonyerecion drivers and the updated Fr IM me at wzskimer424 if intrested

  33. finitodecordoba says:

Got Front Row working on my iBook. iTunes and vids only cause they’re all I have at the moment. One thing about these tutorials that are being posted: I keep getting an Installer error “Cannot open Install XKeys.pkg” every time I try to install XKeys. Running 10.4.2. I do Front Row by running the app and holding Esc.

  34. B LOVE says:

i get the exact same error with XKeys, must not be fully tiger compliant..the minimize bug is really bothering me though!

  35. Marc says:

i’m on the mac mini with the superdrive. does anyone have the unaltered bezel files that i can copy back to my mini. email me or send me a message at w0lfmanlk on aim. thanx

  36. Miles says:

DVD player works fine on my 2.0ghz 20″ iMac. Must be some iMac requirement to get the DVD to play.

  37. MowgliBook says:

No, iMac isn’t needed, but DVD Player 4.6.2 is.
U can find it here http://thepiratebay.org/search.php?q=Front+Row

  38. B LOVE says:

however, with the new DVD 4.6.2, you are only able to access the DVD’s own menu, not the Front Row DVD menu which is unfortunate

  39. Paul says:

Anyone know how to get divx or other movies that wont play in quicktime ( i usually use VLC to watch these movies)

  40. Matt says:

You can run DivX file on front row.
You need to get “DivX Fusion Beta 2″ (2 or above).
    LINK = http://labs.divx.com/archives/000059.html
The preview is smabled but it runs smooth.

  41. Paul says:

Thanks for the link, just 3 more questions. Anyone know how to get xvid files to play also, i got the 3vix codec which allows quicktime to play the video, but it has no sound for some reason, secondly is there any way to remap where it looks for movies and thirdly why does it take sooo long to load up movies or music, everything else is so fast but when i click on my movies or in itunes, artists, it take like 60 seconds to load up any way to solve that

    Thanks for any help

  42. Paul says:

Do you think its possible to have front row use vlc to play all movies? that would be amazing

  43. Ryo says:

This Software can be play with Apple Remote Controler?

  44. Nate says:

What do we do after 10.4.3?!

    FRONTROW BROKE!!!

  45. Tony says:

Installe front row on imac on b oith the core services folder and into my applications folder but after restart, imac freezes when the “starting mac os x” screen comes up and wont load past that. any suggestions?

  46. B LOVE says:

for those of you who think front row doesn’t work in 10.4.3, let me assure you that it does, all you have to do is make sure the front row app is launched and “on top” then hold the escape key.

  47. Jon says:

For those of you, who have a version which doesn’t work with 10.4.3, even with B LOVE’s tip (which btw. only works with an old Front Row crack), just make a new Apple Script that says:

    tell application “Front Row”
    activate
tell application “System Events” to key code 53
    end tell

and make it an run only application… then you can use that instead of the Cocoa or Script file provided right now.
Only catch is that this one does need a dock icon as long as it is working, but the performance is the same… just this little icon coming up in the dock for a sec …

That should help, until all those experts put out a new Cocoa script to launch it… :)

  48. Marc says:

thanks jon that works great! and i’m on 10.4.3.

  49. B LOVE says:

Jon, I’m 99% certain I have the latest attainable release of Front Row – you seem to believe different, so why not share where we can all find the most current?

  50. B LOVE says:

also, you can use an application called “dockless” to hide the script from ever showing up in the dock.

one problem though: when i created this new script, i assigned it to F8 in Xkeys and when it is launched, it asks me if i want to quit or run the script. so i have to press F8, then enter, which is no better than having to press F8, then escape. what gives? how can i write the script so that it doesn’t present that dialogue box??

  51. Marc says:

what exactly does the script say that you have? cause i’m using it and it works great.

  52. B LOVE says:

i had “startup screen” checked. HHUUURRR

  53. Juan says:

I cant get the front row app into my library at all not even with authenticate

    help!

  54. B LOVE says:

its not supposed to go in your library, that’s why. try the applications folder…

  55. B LOVE says:

seems like the coreservices folder is the spot that makes FR behave the best for me now. apps still works as a location too, however

  56. Back when I had 10.4.2, Front Row was in Applications folder only. The framework files were already there. Since XKeys would not install, I placed Front Row in my dock. Launched iTunes first, then Front Row and held Esc. Worked just fine. Only thing that didn’t work was DVD and iPhoto even with 25 pics in Library.

Back in 10.3.9 due to death of hard drive after upgrade to 10.4.3. Won’t be using Front Row for some time unless someone figures out how to trick it into thinking you’re in Tiger on a Panther machine. Would Photo Booth still work in Panther? If it would, can someone send me an uncompressed version of it to finitodecordoba at gmail dot com? The disk image won’t mount.

For David, there is a Front Row equivalent for Windows called Back Row currently in development. It uses the Windows Presentation Framework built into XP and crappy MS Office icons for now. Link: http://www.tuaw.com/2005/11/05/backrow-ugly-windows-cousin-of-frontrow/

  57. gqmacguy says:

Hey guys, word to the wise, you do not need to replace the core bevel files or restart to get it working. Also, DVD playing only works if you have the new iMac G5’s dvd player version (google search should get you a patch). Jon posted the easiest way to initiate FR.

  58. joer says:

If you’re on 10.4.3 like me, dont bother with the framework or the putting things in the system directory. that scares me. just put the front row app in applications and then run it with this script:

    tell application “Front Row”
    activate
tell application “System Events” to key code 53
    end tell

display dialog “When you have finished with Front Row click ‘Quit’” buttons {“Quit”} default button 1

    tell application “Front Row”
    quit
    end tell

Keeps everything clean. Works great for me anyway. I dont much like tampering with my system.

  59. B LOVE says:

does anyone have issues connecting to the movie trailer server in front row 1.0.1?? it worked fine for me in previous versions, but now it won’t even display the posters – goes straight to the error message!

  60. Justin says:

everything works except movie trailers and videos (’cause i don’t wanna install Quicktime 7) and i don’t get artwork in iTunes. Anyone know why? i have all the artwork in my itunes library.

  61. Martyn Ford says:

Software company Geniecommands today introduced an exciting new Macintosh software program designed to give consumers more control and fun over their digital entertainment experiences in their lounge room.
GenieCommands is a unique programmable software application that allows you to control all your applications and media via simple menus and a KEYSPAN REMOTE, in a theatre or lounge room environment.
They provided a complete set of demo Applescript menus to get you started, with links on where to download additional software. These menus can then be edited to suit your lifestyle or create a new one.
Genie is not a one stop solution like Front Row, it is more user definable and can do more with iTunes. It’s about audio and good cheap content is what we want. We know Apple will take Front Row further and we love what they have done with the first version, so we have incorporate it into our software on top of the first menu so nobody misses out.
Future upgrades to Geniecommands in the coming weeks will include a Themes importer. There has also been suggestion of an small screen version in the near future.
Talking with distributors of a remote control brand they have said that it may come down as much as $20 in the near future. As for the rest of the hardware more choice and lower costs are only just round the corner. So dip your toes in the water is warming for the Mac Media Center.

  62. Frydoystrchllnge says:

I’m running 10.3.9 on an ibook G4, and I followed the complicated instructions on how make a script and stuff, but when I run the script a little window just pops up that says Application isn’t running, help, I really want to get this to work.

  63. terry says:

Just wanted to say thanx to the guy who made it possible for the front row to work on the other macs.(what apple should have done anyways!) Thanxs again,
terry. ps if u find a way to fix the dvd function, let us no.

  64. Christopher says:

It works perfectly for me. For other noobs like me, that are having problems with the script, you’ll have to type in the command yourself, and not just copy/paste.
I have one major problem though. When I want to open the Film(might be movie in English) folder it tells me there are no films in the folder. However all of them are compatible with QuickTime and I downloaded the DivX file just to be sure.
Does anyone know what the problem might ne?

  65. lindsey says:

i need to get on it!! my school has blocked every freakin thing on here!!!??? dang im suprised that they havnt blocked music!?!?!?!?!!

  66. Chrisk says:

Wow this was fum and it works perfectly Thanks for all the work that you guys did to figure this out Fantastic effort

  67. jean says:

hi i can’t download the frontrow.app at all *sad* would any kind souls pls send it to me at jeana_seah@yahoo.com.sg

my appreciation would be for life…
