Toast doesn’t care what platform it runs on, does it?

Remember the days of the flying toasters? Those days are here again! We previously mentioned that the screensaver was available for the Mac, which really got some readers upset. Thankfully faithful reader Rick came to the rescue and has compiled a PC version for all to enjoy!

So without fear you can download the retrotastic Flying Toasters screensaver for Mac or PC – FREE!

UPDATE: To install:

Windows – Drag the .scr file into your Windows directory, right click on it and select install. It should now appear in your screensaver list.

Mac: Drag the .saver file into ~/Library/Screen Savers/ (~ is you home directory)

    I still have the DOS version disk. And the Complete After Dark Screen Saver Collection, but setup will not work it wants 3.11 version windows. All the screen savers are zipped up as *.ad files.

  15. Ronald says:

    Hi,

    You can install on Macintosh the following way:
    For 10.3 (Panther) or 10.4 (Tiger), double-click on the .saver file.
    System Preference will then display a panel to know how you want to install it: for yourself or all users. No need to dig through the Library folder.

  16. Ton says:

    An even easier way to install the saver on Mac OS X is to just double click it when unzipped. It installs itself either for the main user only or for all users, at your own choosing.

    Minor bug: On a computer with 2 monitors it only runs on the primary monitor, the secondary monitor continues to show whatever was on it before the screen saver came on (WinXP).

  40. Joey NeckBone says:

    Dan,

    Hello again!

    I emailed you this A.M. (east coast U.S.A. time that is, purely relative depending on where YOU are, lol) for your rendition of “Flying Toasters” to be sent my way via email…

    SO, that said? Please, by all means?? Send it my way if you would! I’m a big fan of screensavers myself.

    Also, I sent you one in the letter/email I wrote in return, for a “fair exchange” type of arrangement…

    (I think you’ll like it as well)

    “Joey Neckbone”

  41. cheryl says:

    Eat your hearts out – I have an actual copy of the screen saver for PC Win v.95 with all the classics (hula girl, rodger dodger, flying toasters, etc…) – I thought I was the only “old school” geek. Thanks for letting me know others are out there.

  42. Joey Neckbone says:

    Dan,

    Thanks for your time & trouble first of all building this “blast-from-the-past”, & also taking the time to send it my way!

    “Joey Neckbone”

    P.S.=> Hope you got the one I built years ago & sent your way as well “in exchange” for the one you’ll send me…

  43. Tim says:

    Ironically, I just ran across an After Dark Star Trek:TNG screen saver. It’s a 2 disk install. Disk utilities say it’s good, but I’m too lazy to format a test machine and install 3.11 to see if they work.

  44. [...] Speaking of computers, why don’t I share niftiness? First, how about a flying toasters screen saver for OSX and XP? Sure, the concept of screen saver died when monitors stopped needing them, but the After Dark screensavers are just classic – I think Vivendi got the assets of Berkeley Systems via Sierra, and I think I could be happy for a short while if someone released a new version of After Dark, with all the classics, for modern operating systems. In the meantime, enjoy the screen saver until the cease-and-desist kicks in. [...]

  45. Ahmed says:

    EXCELLENT – toasters are what make life worth living. Quite possibly the BEST invention ever made!

  50. kickfroggy says:

    yes, where is the toast in the pc version?? in the next update please add the ability to determine how many pieces of toast in addition to toasters. also if anyone really wants the original AD version I have it, and it’s only about a meg zipped, the problem is that there is no way to slow it down for modern pc’s so it runs extremely fast like it’s on crack….I have yet to try it on our old pos p2 350 to see if it runs better on that, but i’d probably still have to rip out some ram…

  51. tonya says:

  53. KleinesF says:

    Thanks fot that time journey. I hope there are no unwanted guests in it.

  54. Nice, remember mentioning the classic flying toaster screensaver in my final year thesis project at college. That thesis was a mad yolk…

  55. tyrone says:

    WHERE IS THIS TOAST?!?!?

    also, wasn’t there an option where you could choose how burnt you wanted it?

  56. Justin says:

    LoL this brings back some great memories. Although I didn’t discover After Dark until version 4.0 sometime around 1993 I think. I remember you could set how burnt you wanted the toast and all that good stuff. Somebody really needs to start a project to recreate all of those classics. Remember DareDevil Dan where he would jump all of the busses and stuff! So great. Does After Dark even exist anymore? I really wish that the source code would get released.

  57. Chuck (Doc) says:

    Here is the solution! Works Great Happy Toasters to everyone
    After Dark and Windows XP
    This information only applies to version 4.0 of the Afterdark series. Other versions of Afterdark will not install on Windows XP.

    Installation
    From your CD locate the ADE folder.

    Copy all of this folder to your harddisk

    Locate and edit the setup.inf file in the new folder

    Locate the section of the file that looks like the following:

    FileCount=8
    File1=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12592,4.0.0.0,5,folder.afi,1,3,AD2.afi,,
    File2=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,13536,4.0.0.0,6,folder.afi,1,3,Disney.afi,,
    File3=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12560,4.0.0.0,7,folder.afi,1,3,MAD.afi,,
    File4=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12400,4.0.0.0,8,folder.afi,1,3,Marvel.afi,,
    File5=Win,N,Y,N,Y,N,L:Install,12976,4.0.0.0,9,folder.afi,1,3,StarTrek.afi,,
    The file count might vary typically the value is 7 or 8. Change the FileCount to be one less.

    e.g. For my example above

    FileCount=7

    Run the setup.exe from the ADE folder.

    After Dark in Action
    If you are successful then you should have all of your favourite antics from Bad Dog, Super Guy’s Crazy thoughts and the musical Flying Toasters

    Some people have reported that the After Dark tab does not appear correctly on the display screen (see above). If this is the case with your installation then select the settings tab and press the advanced button. The Afterdark controls may appear here.

    Known Issues
    If you choose Fish World, the Art Critic or Rain Forest modules then these cause problems with the options and may lock up, you will need to restart before you can configure any other modules. However if you are happy with the default options then these will run ok.

    As mentioned ONLY 4.0 modules will run on XP this means that you won’t be able to have you Startrek and Simpsons modules running.

    For reasons not yet determined some of screensavers do appear to max the processor when running on Win XP

  58. Chuck (Doc) says:

    I installed using the custom option and unchecked the direct x tab as some of those early programs did not check if you had a later version of directx and wrote over it.

  93. Shubes says:

    Hey all, a flooded bedroom closet forced me to sort thru the thousands of old floppies I had carted around for years. I found Totally Twisted After Dark on 3 floppies, spanned with (remember this) an old DOS prog called Slice. Anyhoo, I managed to salvage the three spanned archives, and rescued the full TTAD prog. The sad news is it won’t install on XP. (But you knew that.) However, I’ve got it in a full zipped file if anyone’s interested. I would love to see someone come up with a way to make it run on XP, ‘cuz it’s the one screensaver worth looking at.

    I used to watch Mike for hours. hahahhahha! Thanks for the memories!
