How-To: Downloading Yahoo! Music Videos with Firefox & VLC
Update 12/29: For a streamlined method of retrieving the required MMS:// URi, check our latest tutorial: How-To: Download music videos from Yahoo with LyFOX & VLC.
Update 10/17: Do something with your new WMV video collection. Convert the videos and import them into iTunes: How-To: Convert WMV to MOV for playback in iTunes [Windows].
Hat tip to Adam for helping throw this updated tutorial together for downloading Yahoo! Music Videos. I know a few readers were waiting patiently for updates to our How-To: Download Music Videos from Yahoo Launch with VLC, How-To: Download Music Videos from Yahoo Launch with Flashget, and How-To: Download 700K music video streams from Yahoo. As a forewarning, the first run through will be a bit tedious.
If you don’t have Firefox and the very useful GreaseMonkey Firefox extension installed on your system, you will not be able to complete this tutorial.
Step 1: Install the PKLaunch userscript. There are two versions. On for both OSX and Windows users. Windows users right-click here and select “Install user script”. OSX users do the same here.
Step 2: Sign in with your Yahoo account on Yahoo! Launch. Select the music video of your choice. PKLaunch will force the music video to open a new window for video playback. Make note of the drop down menu which offers different video bandwidth options. If you recall our previous tutorials, the 700K streams are higher quality videos usually reserved for SBC Yahoo! customers.
Step 3: The next step requires that you open an “info” window on the currently playing video. OSX users press ‘CMD + I’ and Windows users select ‘Tools > Page Info’ from the toolbar menu.
In the ‘Information’ window select the ‘Media’ tab. With the stream address highlighted, select the ‘Save As..’ button at the bottom of the window. When prompted with the ‘Save As..’ window, change the “medialog.ASP” filename to “medialog.TXT”.
Step 4: Open the “medialog.TXT” file in the plain text editor of your choice. Highlight the entire .ASX address and save it to your clipboard (Windows: CTRL + C; OSX: CMD + C).
Step 5: Open VLC. Go to ‘File > Open Network Stream’. Paste the previously copied .ASX address into the ‘HTTP / FTP / MMS / RTSP’ field. Make sure that the ‘Advanced / Stream output’ box at the bottom of the window is unchecked.
Step 6: This next step will differ depending on your OS. With the stream playing in VLC:
Windows users: Select ‘View > Playlist’. In the ‘Playlist’ window expand the entries until you locate a time block. It will look something like -(0:04:01). Right-click on the item and select ‘Info’. The URi field will contain the coveted MMS:// URi.
OSX users: While the stream is playing, hit CMD + I. The MMS:// address is in the URi field. Copy the address and close the window.
Step 7: Return to the main VLC window. Go to ‘File > Open Network Stream’. Paste the MMS:// URi into the ‘HTTP / FTP / MMS / RTSP’ field. Make sure that ‘Advanced / Stream Output’ is checked and select the ‘Settings’ button. In the ‘Settings’ box select the ‘File’ radio button. Specify the save path and title the video filename.WMV. Lastly, check the ‘Dump Raw Output’ box and click ‘OK’ through the settings windows. VLC will download the video to your specified directory.![]()
If you find step by step text tutorials challenging to follow, check out the Flash video here (Windows users).

This might just be me but I think after step 2 once you have got the video playing and have got the link by goin to Properties it is easier to download it using something like Net Transport.
I’m not saying VLC is not a good player but its just easier the other way.

Is there a way to download them as mp4 or mov files? Or a way to play them in iTunes?

Hey, I was able to get this trick to work but my only problem is that I can’t get any videos greater than 390×368 and I can’t exactly figure out why. Any help?

Then I don’t think you can Dylan. If you were on a Mac, you could get em to play in iTunes as WMV’s, but I don’t know of any way to do that. Seems your only coice is to download em as WMV’s and then convert em to MPG/MOV with another app.

If you want to turn them into .MOV files just download Quicktime 7 pro. Open the file and export them using the “to iPod” selection and put it on your desktop, then you can open the file in itunes.

Ok, figured, but you said “ergh umm “freeâ€Â? alternatives”. Im not mad, I knew to do that, I had ergh “Bought” Quicktime 6, but alas, it didnt work. Well, let’s hope you do find some “ergh umm “freeâ€Â? alternatives”

But I can’t even get a WMV to open in quicktime…
Oct 16th, 2005

Dylan: You can’t open WMV in Quicktime. You need to convert it to AVI or MOV first. Tomorrow’s tut uses Quicktime 7 PRO and Video Cleaner Pro. If you all want to follow along, start looking for ergh “copies” of both.

I’ve downloaded Firefox along with the Greasemonkey extension and installed the PKLaunch userscript. However, everytime I try and click on a music video to view it, all I get is a blank white PKLaunch window with nothing in it. I see the drop down menu at the bottom of the screen along with one hyperlink for Yahoo! Music and another for PKLaunch - but that’s it. What am I doing wrong?

It’s just strange because I can see the videos with IE, but not with Firefox. Do I need some sort of media player plugin or something else besides (1) Firefox, (2) Greasemonkey extension, and (3) PKLaunch userscript?

Dise- try making sure that your Windows Media Player plugin for Firefox is working properly. That sounds as though it is the problem. There is a guide here that should help you out with that. Good luck.

Man, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong here. It just won’t work. I’ve tried all those walkthroughs; I’ve tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it with all the extensions and still nothing. Everytime I open up a video all I get is a blank white box with the little bandwidth drop down menu at the bottom. I think I need to call Geed Squad or something. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Oct 18th, 2005
Adam
Dise, if PKLaunch is opening a window, then it’s doing it’s job. You’re getting a white window because either your Window Media Player plugin isn’t working, or you don’t even have it installed on your system. Focus on WMP, not Firefox.
Oct 18th, 2005
Derek
Dise: Possible solution… Disable all extensions except for GreaseMonkey and retry Yahoo Music with the PKLaunch script.

just an advice to Mac Users, if you dont want to get the error Netscape bla bla message please do this:
1. go to the Artist and click on the watch tv icon
2. click on the photo of the artist
for instance if you go to top 100 and click on the link for the video, chances are high, it wont work and you are get the netscape message, at least this way works on my mac and on the mac users i have told them.

There is a quicker way that bypasses Steps 3 and 4, just right-click on the video of the windows media player itself inside that windows that pops up, and slect ‘Properties’ then copy the uri next to ‘Location:’

Why is it on some videos I get Authfailed, Even tho I do exactly the same thing as what I do to the other videos which work?
Oct 21st, 2005
Adam
To those getting “Auth Failed”: you have to past the ASX uri’s into VLC rather quickly. I tried saving severa; “medialog.txt” files for various videos thinking that i could just go back later and download them- but it doesn’t work. I don’t know if Yahoo has dynamic link changing or something like that, but it seems that the ASX uri in “Medialog.txt” only works for about 2 minutes or less. All I can say is try to get the ASX address pasted into VLC as quickly as possible.

If you are using OS X I think the fastes way to download the videos is with lyFox. It automatically grabs the MMS ID, even for the 700kb streams. You can search for the videos you want within the app and don’t ever have to open your browser. Just find the video, select get info, copy the mms paste it into VLC and you are set. You can find it here http://fernyb.2ya.com/

I’m having trouble with the white window now too. I was able to download five videos and then after noticing that my computer was slowing down (checking task manager, firefox was hounding 100+MB) I restarted it. Big mistake since I now only get the white screen ontop of the Bitrate dropdown.
Checked to make sure mplayer plays other wmv streaming files. No luck with the music.yahoo.com files though. Help please.

Anyone think of doing this for AOL Music Videos?
Oct 23rd, 2005

Tyler: That means you don’t have the GreaseMonkey script [PKLaunch] installed and running correctly. If you did, it would catch the request and spawn a new window for video playback.
Oct 23rd, 2005

Grease monkey has just been updated to work in firefox beta 2, but for somereason, it does not allow you to download vids, it brings up the same message Tyler has.

Has anyone actually managed to get the new pkLaunch 0.6rc3 to play any videos? I keep getting the Music Authentication failed thingy all the time. :-(
User Agent Switcher won’t work either, it seems to only play through the proper Launch way (IE, their own window) funnily enough. I hope Yahoo haven’t implemented IE-only protection tricks….

I got music authentication problem before too, works for me after I install user switcher. The first time it didn’t work either. Then I tried on a different computer, and it worked. I don’t know why. I guess you have to do reinstall or some thing.
In step #3 you will have to right click near the bottom of VLC player to get the information.

Regarding the white screens in the window that PKLaunch opens (or black screens as they have recently turned into with the latest PKLaunch update), I’ve discovered that if you right click over the bandwidth drop down menu, you should be able to scroll down to “View Page Info” in the menu and continue the steps, even though the video does not play.
Oct 31st, 2005

hey everbody it works all you have to do is just download new update for pklaunch http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/ then follow the steps but when the video plays just right click and hit properties then on first page you see location copy that and use vcl normal way to find the mms and to download it and please please make sure you sign in for yahoo or it will not work and believe me it works and i hope you understand this

I successfully ripped a few videos using these procedures (OSX+Flip4Mac). But recently, when I rip a video, I only get the first two or three seconds of the video. Whether I open the video in WMP, QT, or iTunes, I get the same result - a few seconds of video and then nothing. Any suggestions?
Thanks for developing such a well-documented, useful procedure!

Yeah I believe today is the 4th I am trying to do this I have got all the way to the save as but it says that the site isn’t there or its name was changed is there a newer version then: 0.5.3? It seems like fuc*ing yahoo is thirsty to not let us do this. You know that MTV and BET and all these places get the shit for free its for advertisement reasons? They need to just give it to us Damn!
Nov 4th, 2005
MarzSyndrome
Hmmmm, looks like I don’t have to worry anymore!
It appears uninstalling Greasemonkey (even though it was already at 0.5.3), downloading it again from its site, and reinstalling it back into Firefox (and subsequently reinstalling pKLaunch 0.6rc3) managed to make everything work as it should again.
Marz is happy about this. Plus it appears addmusicvideos.com can once again stream Yahoo videos as per usual.
:-)

bugged out
this method does not seem to work anymore, yahoo might be blocking us or something. the asx file no longer contains the stream, now it contains a “stream abusing” message..

Ok, new problem… I got it to stream through VLC, to DL to a .WMV file, but when i try to open the file with WMP it gives me this error “Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.” Now the files are in a different codec than WMVs i think… dunno how to possibly fix that… any one else have this problem??

This setup still works, here’s what I did. For Users who cant play videos in firefox.
For XP users (Quick Setup)
1. Install Greasemonkey
2. Install pkLaunch v0.6rc3
3. Go to music.yahoo.com (Hint: You don’t need to login because the script logs you in as “zcoderz”)
4. If you can’t get the popup window refresh your browser until you’re login as “zcoderz”.
5. It’s okay if your video screen is black or white just right click on Bandwidth > View Page Info > Media (tab) > Save As > medialog.txt
6. Open the file and copy link, Open VLC press CTRL+N, click radio button HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS paste URL in “OPEN” field.
7. Open playlist then right click on Time Block (ie. (-0:04:18)) select Info.
8. CTRL+C (We’re copying the URI link)
9. Bring VLC Player to focus press CTRL+N, paste in URL
10. Check Stream Output then click on Stream
11. Check File > Dump Raw Input > Pick a place to save your video with extention *.wmv (ie C:\My Music\Gary Allen - Best I Ever Had.wmv)
12. You wont see any video when it’s dumping all you have to do is wait for the VLC Player to finish playing the file then you’re done.
Have fun.

Instead of This
It’s okay if your video screen is black or white just right click on Bandwidth > View Page Info > Media (tab) > Save As > medialog.txt
if you right click the black screen and goto properties you can copy the asx location there
saves a little bit of time

For those who are having problems playing vids, heres an alternative. I have same problem, think its a codec.
Use Cocsoft Streamdown. I haven’t tried it with this solution but have used it on other websites that have wmvs.
It works on artist’s web sites (ususally not as much security), mp3.com, and some others.
Another cool site for music vids (not mine) is http://home.comcast.net/~othastar/Music.html

you guys need to follow directions..it works fine
Nov 24th, 2005

guys it still worked for me! you don’t even need wmp ver. 10 to work, just make sure you have firefox + greasemonkey + pkLaunch v0.6rc3 installed. when you see the video window pop-up, right click on bandwidth, choose view page info and copy the full url in media tab. append “view-source:” before pasting url in firefox. copy new url from notepad page that pops up and do the view-source again before pasting url in firefox. repeat until you get the “mms” url. this will be the final url that you paste in vlc. hope this helps speed it up a bit

I think im having the same issue as Nijim. followed the directions perfectly-even got a couple of vids already. those will play but if i try to download another one, it wont finish downloading. it will stay frozen on the last second - ex: 0:04:01/0:04:01. does anyone know why it could be doin this??
Nov 28th, 2005
chris
ps- after that if u try to open the file in WMP, it wont play, gives an error: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file
Nov 28th, 2005
Katherine
This method worked fine for me today and yesterday. I am able to get the mms with no problem and all the files will play. The only problem I have now is that no media files will play in the firefox browser itself, even ones that worked before. I even uninstalled greasemonkey and pklaunch, but still no luck. Oh well. I guess I’ll have to use the dreaded internet explorer to do that stuff.
Oh, is the vlc media player capable of recording rtsp streaming quicktime files? I don’t think so, so could anyone recommend a good program for that?
Nov 29th, 2005
Evan
hahah ok i think this is shut down cause when i do a view source: of the url from the media tab it redirects to
view-source:http://us.rd.yahoo.com/launch/video/errors/streamPoachers/notoken/*
STREAMPOACHERS…. lol yea there on to us any other way to do it?
Dec 1st, 2005
munkey_b0y
Katherine, VLC player is capable of capturing realtime streams (RTSP) just use the RTSP uri box instead of the HTTP or MMS boxes when you click ‘Open Network Stream’
you will of course have to get the RTSP URi for the file you want.

Yeah… supposedly the new PKLaunch does not support Launch.com anymore, yahoo kept updating his site says.
Long story short, older version of firefox might still work, but for the time being if you update everything, it won’t work he says.
Dec 9th, 2005

I recently found another website (http://zeo.unic.net.my/2005/12/10/accessing-yahoo-music-with-firefox-part-3/) trying to resolve this same problem, and their answer involved using the FF extension “IE-tab”. I have FF 1.5 and the most recent version of the extension (1.0.6.4) and Launch has been working fine.
Incase you don’t like the IE-tab idea, pkLaunch’s author’s website (http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/) says, as of Dec 1st, that the next version of the script, that actually works with FF 1.5 and greasemonkey, is essentially ready, just a couple minor bugs that are getting worked out.

The IE-tab extension is still working fine for me, if that’s what you’re referring to with the “WILL NOT WORK”. I’m still waiting for the new pkLaunch as it looks better than what happens with IE-tab, but atleast there’s a temporary fix for right now.
Dec 14th, 2005
Unknowndude
How do you do it with ie-tab?
Dec 15th, 2005
meskibob
Once you have the extension properly installed, just go to launch.yahoo.com in FF. Click on the FF icon in your status bar (enabled to be there by default in the extension). You should see the icon change to the the IE icon in the status bar and in the address bar. Sign into your account (if you have one). Then just start a video like you normally would (play my station, clicking on the link to a selected video, etc). You should then have the player pop up in a new tab. The one caveat about all this is that the tab the player is nested in fills the rest of the background with your most recent view, but it doesn’t affect playback.

Yeah i had that .htaccess pw prompt problem. U just clear your cookies and relogin. But there’s another problem with hijacking sessions because the Pklaunch script uses predefined cookies, and the url session ids. While downloading music videos i kept accidentally hijacking someones yahoo session. Someone with more intel on this topic should be able to fabricate some kind of exploit for this problem.
Dec 22nd, 2005

Hello Geeks,
First off, I want to appreciate all those helping noobs like me to do something impossible and for setting up helping forums like this one. Anyways, question time…
I was googling for a software that’s completely irrelevant to this site when I accidentally landed on this site and the curiousity got the best of me and read the whole tut. I then downloaded “Grease Monkey” extension for my firefox browser (version 1.5) from here (http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/) and after that I applied this “pklaunch-0.8.1.user.js” userscript (from here http://www.pooyak.com/p/pklaunch/pklaunch-0.8.1.user.js). As instructed, I clicked on the music.yahoo.com link and tried to play a song but sadly, a new window popped up (as told in the tut) but the whole screen was black. Ofcourse, there were other options in the bottom but there was no video at all.
So somebody please help me with this problem

If the MMS is copied to the clipboard automaticly, should this be the MMS “8742564677″ (as example)??
At which step i receive the MMS in the clipboard?
After searching for a track and play it until it ends?
Exist there a tut for the new Lyfox?
Thanks everyone for helping me out of this… :-)

Hello Peeps,
OK I downloaded LyFOX and downloaded my first video from Y!Launch using VLC player but you would not believe if I said I reboot my laptop 5 freakin times. Everytime I start downloading a video, the VLC player’s download bar will start moving bit by bit and when it is almost halfway thru, it will god-damn freeze the computer. Somebody please pleeeease help me with any fix for this. Also, is there anyway I could do this process for multiple files?
Jan 12th, 2006
polarBear
when you double click the video in the list that is when it MMS is automaticly copied to the clipboard.
Jan 13th, 2006
Jammerules
Yes Polar Bear,I know that. But after getting all the needed info, when I start downloading the song in VLC - it gets stuck after half way.Let me tell you the steps:
1. I searched for a song in LyFOX and I got the song
2. I then double click it and after it says ready to play song I right click on the video file and say “Copy selected:” option
3. I then paste it in notepad and I get a lengthy string with mms:\\ prefixed
4. I then open the freaking VLC player (sorry about my frustration!! but it still is bothering me) and click File -> Open Network Stream -> select the radio button (HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS) and paste that lengthy string there
5. After that,I checked the option button “Stream Output” and click “Settings” button
6. I then, click the “File” option button and then save that file on the desktop with “no extension”. Infact, I tried with givinig a “.wwmv” extension at this point too…but no luck
7.I then say OK to all the open windows and now the VLC player pretends as if it is downloading and as a proof it has the bar in the bottom of its window. The small button on the bar (download bar) “tip-toes” and after like it reached halfway (sometimes almost to the end also!) the computer freezes. Is this normal to everybody or just me! Please pleeeeeeeease help

FernyB, you made an excellent job but i think Lyox isn’t working like it should work on OSX.4.4, ’cause i doubleclick on an artists video, see the “ready to play” message but i never see any mms adress in my clipboard/Textedit. i even just can copy video-ID, artist name and track name from lyfox… that’s all.
I’m an idiot, i would say now - but there must be an solution. Would be better if there exist a tutorialon yor website or this on uneasysilence should be renewed.
thanks for reading my problems…i will go to the nuthouse. good night!

Hey to avoid alot of confusion, you can go to http://webratsmusic.com/artist-2688-martina-mcbride.php and search for your favorite music video, in the preview video screen, click properties and copy the address there and then do vlc, bookmark time, etc…. and there you go!
