Ever on the lookout for Web 2.0 apps that may help organize my daily life, I’ve begun testing a new beta calendar service by the name of CalendarHub. Embracing Web 2.0 goodness, CalendarHub offers calendar sharing, tagging, multiple calendars, and helpful listings of local events based on zipcode. Look for a detailed review within the next few days as I familiarize myself with the service and features. The service is in a limited beta. If you’re itching to try the service submit your email on the front page.

Some initial thoughts concerning the service:

The Good:

  • Ajax goodness – I can never get enough of snappy interfaces and drag n’ drop operability.
  • The ability to create multiple calendars under a single username. Example: One private calendar for “personal” events, a second for school, and a third for “social” events. Users are able to keep individual calendars private or opt to share them with other users.
  • A handy desktop CalendarHub widget which allows users the ability to manage – add, delete, or review – upcoming events.
  • Local events catered to your specific locality. I’m sure the database is still being compiled. Any events you add to your ‘Local Events’ calendar are made public by defualt allowing other local users to view the events.
  • SMS alerts for upcoming events. Support for all major US carriers.
  • ICS & CVS Import / Export
  • The ability to create full webpages for sharing your calendar with friends and family.
  • RSS feed for adding to your favorite feed reader.
  • Tags – Tagging personal / public events allows yourself and friends to quickly search through all your scheduled events.

Room for improvement:

  • As of this posting there is no option to create repetitive events. I have a number of weekly appointments / meetings which I would prefer to schedule as a batch instead of individual daily events.
  • No option to delete newly created calendars. Chris from CalendarHub has informed me that the option to delete existing calendars is now available.

The good obviously outweigh the “areas for improvement”. CalendarHub offers the option to email “friends” to allow them access to your shared calendars. If your friends are not yet registered for CalendarHub the email announcement sent from your account will contain a link to register for the service. FYI, RSSCalendar.com can set reoccurring appointments and generated rss feeds for your calendar…
