Update: Meebo - Trillian-like Ajax chat client

Finally. A decent web based chat service which supports all the major instant message protocols. Unfortunately, there’s no Jabber support so it’s a no go for Google Talk fanatics. Bookmark this one for chatting while you’re moving around on different computers. The service is still Alpha so don’t expect perfection (yet). Basic features such as ‘Away Messages’ and ‘Emoticons’ are missing. Who really needs those anyway right?

I’ve been toying with Meebo for the past hour or so. Aside from not being able to set an away message, I think that Meebo is off to a great start. For Firefox users who keep multiple tabs open, Meebo will flash incoming or new messages in the tab title. Try it for yourself.

Update 9/18/05: Meebo now supports Jabber [read Google Talk].

Update 9/28/05: Meebo added a slew of new features: You asked for away message support, Meebo responds with a list of default ‘Away Messages’ and an option for ‘Custom Away Messages’. What other web based messenger services offer away messages? You asked to view status messages / profile views for contacts, Meebo responds with support on AIM / MSN / Jabber / Yahoo.

I can’t think of any other feature Meebo could add. Forget an actual desktop client. Meebo is all I need.

    Who’d say they wouldn’t be able to have Jabber support on this first revision, though. Jabber, as an open protocol is probably the easiest of all to implement. I remember Gish doing Jabber so long ago that it’s totally weird Meebo doesn’t.

    Oh I’m sure the next revision will be a nice improvement over the current alpha build. With so many potential users, they’d need to find or setup a reliable server to go through [Jabber].

    Comon yall, please tell me that you have tried proxies? If not try it. You can always use the microsoft terminal serivces client, more commonly known as Remote Desktop Connection, to connect to your home computer. Once you have connected you are out of reach of the firewall. Remember yall use google to search for proxies. A very good client program for bypassing firewalls is JAP.     At my school, MSN messenger has recently been blocked, so we use fx messenger, you can try http://www.e-messenger.net/, thats what i use.
    and also, if you cant get onto through that, theres always http://www.icq.com/ but you have to download it, an im not sure if its any good.

    I love to chat online, I have so many people on my buddy list.
    The only problem with that is wehen i go away, gor example:right now i am visiting my grandmother for a couple weeks about two hours away from my home town.
    All week i have been trying to get on AIM, so I would try to sign on Meebo but it wouldnt show my buddy list, or I’d be waiting for about a half hour and i would get a pop-up saying Thank you for using Meebo you have now signed off, I would get that after waiting not chatting.
    I called my friend last night and she said whats up with u signing on but not writing back then signing off, we realised that it signs me on but i cant see my buddy list.
    Please improove Meebo in these ways, I think its a great site but just needs to be quicker, try an upgrade

    if you have tried this then disregard…use a CGI Proxy site
    go to google and type CGI proxy, if your school blocks the work proxy then spelled it like this p r o x y, google is smart enought to figure out that is one word, or go to google.co.jp google in japanese, your results will still be in english but at least you wont get blocked…..or try translating the site with a web translator, is almost like using a proxy… i’m not claming to be an expert at this, i’m just telling you what works for me…i know http://www.ctunnel.com is blocked in most places, but try putting an “s” after http and see if it works, (https://www.ctunnel.com)
    a site that works for me is hidesafe.com, hasnt been blocked yet.

    An option for getting on msn at school is to use my own proxy, which mainly has not been blocked as it does not contain the word proxy.
    it has been cleverly disguised, as after 5 years at my school i realise that in any other case it would have been blocked.

    You need a username and password, which you can do by emailing me: crutchiemcfield@gmail.com with DANIEL.Z1B REQUEST in the subject line. then go to http://www.thegrid.co.nr. works most of the time. if not try http://www.daniel.z1b.net/schoolshelp/thegrid.php. same username and passwor will work for both.

    This is what is up. My School has all the 9-11th graders with laptops. All School year Till we graduate. This of coarse means one of the heavyiest web filters known to man. It is keyword sensative too. They got filtering even at home. It wont allow you to acess the internet without logging on to the server.     Meebo is probably a most popular web messenger in the schools and colleges for USA/Canada, but because it’s so popular it gets blocked unlike any other. There are many other web messengers, but the closest for meebo fans is ILoveIM.com web messenger (http://www.iloveim.com). It comes with some ads on a screen which is a little worse then meebo, but it’s a very stable and solid application being around for like 4-5 years.
