Social this, tags that… Web browsing this, why not weblog that?

FlockThe internet has transformed into a giant melting pot of webapps / services with social network integration. It’s all about sharing isn’t it? Tags, bookmarks, photostreams, weblogs… I know all about sharing! I often find myself bouncing between dozens of tabs. One tab for del.icio.us, another for Flickr, a third for Wordpress. You get the picture. Why can’t everything be seamless? We need synergy! We need Flock.

Unfortunately, I have no first hand experience with the Flock browser. Currently in private beta. However, I have gathered a plethora of information from various sources. I’ve also received the following screen shots of the Flock web interface. The true power of Flock is within the browser itself.

Flock uses a del.ico.us-like bookmarking system complete with tags called Breadcrumbs. I actually prefer the name breadcrumbs over bookmarks. Kind of reminds me of that Hansel & Gretal story of leaving breadcrumbs behind to find your way. Breadcrumbs to find your favorite sites. Eh? See the connection? Judging by the web interface it looks like Flock users will be able to access their crumbs from any internet browser.

The actual feature that I think most users will be wow‘d by is the integrated blogging. Roland Tanglao’s quick overview sums it up nicely:

I was blown away! Drag and drop blogging – drag text from a blog post and it automatically creates a cite tag with a link to the original post and the quoted text is indented using a blockquote tag. Drag and drop Flickr photos (I do this painfully every day for Urban Vancouver e.g. check out today’s East 12th and Commercial photo). And Chris teased me with some more future features like having del.icio.us as your bookmarks (goodbye to useless local bookmarks).

Who uses local bookmarks these days anyways? Well enough of that. I’ll stop acting like I know what I’m talking about. Considering I don’t have a copy of Flock to play around with, I’ll continue waiting patiently for the official release sometime this month. Flock: What’s so powerful about not local bookmark…

We never got an explanation why the Flock developers removed the bookmarks toolbar. What does the majority think?
What do they find so powerful or brilliant about removing a feature? Isn’t it the same as using Firefox without the local bookmarks?…

  5. [...] Flock has geared up for their second act. The ’social web browser’ has been kinda dormant for the last few months as they retooled their website and released the .09 version of the browser. [...]
