Flickr: ‘Explore’ and ‘Interestingness’

Flickr apparently has a “lab” of mad Flickrati brewing up all sorts of new features utilizing complex algorithmic mathematical mumbo jumbo to bring exciting and interesting pictures to viewers. What a mouthful. OK, that may not be exactly what Flickr posted on their blog but it’s what I like to think happens behind the scenes at Flickr.

This was mentioned concerning the new Interestingness feature:

There are lots of things that make a photo ‘interesting’ (or not) in the Flickr. Where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when; who marks it as a favorite; its tags and many more things which are constantly changing. Interestingness changes over time, as more and more fantastic photos and stories are added to Flickr.

On top of all this, Flickr now offers clustering. Yes… you guessed it, thanks to Flickr we can find other Flickrites in the area to meet and cuddle with! OK maybe not. Clustering is more like multi-related-tag browsing. There’s also a nifty calendar view which posts the most interesting image every 24 hours.
