The number next to a title of a story represents the amount of comments that particular story receives. So if there is a 1 that means there is only one comment.

The comments were designed to give you, the reader, the ability to give us feedback. It is totally spam free, and it only asks for your email address to make sure you are not a spammer. Your email address will be disposed of after that comment was posted.
