It all started with Larry Schwimmer’s birthday wish hastily drawn on a
Post-It note. Total time to get this project off the ground? One week. That’s all it takes. Utilizing data provided by NASA, Google unveiled a Google Maps-like service to commemorate the anniversary of the Lunar Landings.

In honor of the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969, we’ve added some NASA imagery to the Google Maps interface to help you pay your own visit to our celestial neighbor. Happy lunar surfing.

There isn’t much to browse other than the surrounding area around the 6 US lunar landings. Google will probably expand on the side-project by next year.

Update: I didn’t notice this earlier until xSmurf left a comment. If you zoom in as close as possible to the moon surface, it starts to look like cheese. Is the Google Moon project nothing more than a joke? I wouldn’t think Google would do something like that for such an important milestone in space exploration. Maybe someone on the dev team thought they’d insert the cheesy image?
