How-to: Phreaking your iPod (DTMF)

DTMF stands for Dual Tone Multi Frequency. Using these tones will – in theory – grant you special access to switch functions through telephone carriers.

Due to the highly illegal nature of creating any one of these dialers, I won’t go into the actual details required to turn your iPod – or any other MP3 player – into a tone dialer. I’ll give you a reassuring kick though on getting a Blue Box iPod.

  • Download the necessary WAV tones here
  • Import into iTunes and create playlist
  • Set a 5 second delay between tracks before importing on to iPod
  • Place earphone on the mic end of a telephone and play

For a more technical – and educational reading – on how a Blue Box works, point your browser here.

Disclaimer: This is for experimental uses only. Creating a blue box, red box, or green box is illegal.

To the writer of this blog, good post. I’ve been wondering about whether or not this would be possible.

To those asking for copies of the files. If you aren’t smart enough to get the files when they are fairly easy to get to, then you probably shouldn’t be trying to break the law anyway.
