Label ordering trick for Gmail

By default, Gmail automatically orders your labels alphabetically. For those that want their labels organized their way, use the following trick:

  • Log into your Gmail account and click on ‘edit labels’ at the bottom of your labels list.
  • Add spaces before each label to control the list order. e.g. ( underscores represent spaces)

    _ _ _ Friends
    _ _ Work
    _ Girlfriend
    Other

Gmail will automatically remove the spaces once you click save. Your new labels list will read:

    Friends
    Work
    Girlfriend
    Other

  • The hint was brought to my attention thanks to Caleb over on the Gmail-Generation Google Group.
