Please note that the following will only work for Firefox users.

Have you ever found yourself watching an embedded video within a website? More importantly, have you ever found yourself wondering how to download that same video to keep locally for later viewing? Follow these easy steps and you’ll have the ability to download embedded movie files from your ‘favorite’ websites (poon).

  • First, install the GreaseMonkey Firefox extension from here.
This extension allows users to “customize” websites they visit on the
fly with special scripts. After installing, restart your Firefox
browser. After the restart, go up to Tools in the menu bar. You
should now have the following menu options: “Install user script”,
“Manage user scripts”, and “User script command”.
  • Next, we have to install the GreaseMonkey user scripts. You can find a growing list of scripts here. To download embedded movies, you’ll want to install the Unembed
script. Click on the Unembed link. Doing so will open a page with what
appears to be plain text (the actual script code). Go to Tools > Install user script. A “Install user script” window will pop up. Click OK to install.
  • Finally,
navigate to a website with an embedded video file. After installing the
GreaseMonkey Unembed script, you should now see a [download] link at
the bottom of the movie file allowing you to save the file locally on
    your own computer.

You have now seen first hand the power of GreaseMonkey user scripts. If you checked the script site, you most likely noticed the many choices to improve your browsing experience. Check back often, the options for user submitted scripts grows each day. A few of the scripts that I use are: [Google About.com remover], [Gmail: Adding persistent searches], and [Gmail: Mailto links to Gmail compose].

Oh thanks a million for point this one out. It\’s either a brand new one or I totally missed it before. Personally, another very useful one is GoogleCustomize (http://www.customizegoogle.com/).

  2. Bob says:

The embed thing is already implemented in Firefox, AFAIK. Go to \”Tools\” then \”Page Info\”. Click on the \”Media\” tab and look for any \”Embed\” tags. BAM another notch.

  3. Mark says:

    Excellent guide. Thanks.

  4. lufusol says:

Uhm this is great unless you want to save an embedded WMV that requires a referrer, because when you click “download” it just launches windows media player and you can’t save it from there, either!

  5. Darna Fanboy says:

GreaseMonkey doesn’t work on the videos found in this page: http://www.igma.tv/svideos.php?showid=105#

    :(

Is there any other way to save these videos?

  6. I checked the site real quick. When the popup windows comes up and the video loads, right-click and select ‘page info’ and then navigate to the ‘media’ tab. Search through the list for the embedded video (.wmv) and choose ’save as..’ at the bottom of the window. Select the save path and you’re done.

  7. jacob says:

how do you save videos that have their own pop-up window inside FF, without any tab tab options at the top of the browser…cant save the videos then no matter what, even when you try the embed feature, nothin there to save, just some broken small gif

  8. @Jacob: Do you have a link for the video you’re trying to download?

  9. Darna Fanboy says:

    Nope. still didn’t work, Derek.
    http://www.igma.tv/svideos.php?showid=105#
I followed your instructions, found the embedded wmv link in the Media tab, but then this dialog box just keeps saying “The link could not be saved. The web page might have been removed or had its name changed.”
This is the URL of the embedded video: http://69.59.187.66:8888/gma7/darna_071205_darna.wmv
If anyone could help me figure out how to save this and the others, i’d really appreciate it. thanks.

  10. Hmm I’ll toy around with it when I get some extra time. I tried a few different methods but it looks like there is some sort of protection… I’ll get back to you on this one.

  11. earl says:

Here’s an odd page. I tried using the “page info” method as well as greasemonkey with no success. It’s in wmv format. Does that have anything to do with it? the page is: http://www.chickfight.com/mpeg39.html

Simply go (in Firefox) in Tools / Options / Downloads / Plugs-ins and uncheck the file extension (ie mwv, mpg, etc…) then choose save… when the download popup appears!

  13. T Bone says:

How about real media player files? I couldn’t get it to work on this site. http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,1595,4753,00.html#

  14. Steve says:

    Umm…

I went into FF in tools/options/downloads/plug-ins and unchecked the .asx extension from the plug-in list just like IRONMAN said.

I was trying to view a video that way and it didn’t work out, but now I LOST the .asx extension alltogether in that list and is not even there anymore to be “re-checked” back on?!

How do I get it back, or restore it, or reset defaults in FF.

    Weird.

    Thnaks,

    Steve

  15. Steve says:

    Never mind…

I answered my own question. I just closed all instances of FF, reopened a new FF and .asx WAS there.

    Wheeew.

    Thanks anyway,

    Steve

  16. Thomas says:

Can’t get this to work on Comedy Central’s website.

[Download] just pulls up an empty window, same as if I grab the URL for the object (I like to use the Adblock plugin for this: it shows all the objects, their type and their URL… handy even if you AREN’T blocking them).

  17. Steve says:

I’m having the same problem as Thomas at http://videos.streetfire.net/. Any suggestions guys?

This embedded video is quit long and does not play well over the internet. But it seems that it is unable to download it before viewing it.

  22. Jon says:

Thanks for your tips for downloading embedded video! I’ve been a avid reader of your site since I found the uxtheme.dll hack. I am curious as to why I am having so many problems using your embed trick on this page http://wcco.com/video/?id=11491@wcco.dayport.com
I would love the video of the Bengals fan taking the ball out of Favre’s hands!

Thanks in advance and keep up the great site!

  24. Tony says:

  25. mike says:

This is awesome! BUT, I cannot download any of these National Geographic videos, like this one: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/11/1116_051116_predator_video.html

    Thanks!!!

  52. steph says:

I installed the greasemonkey extension and then installed the user script as well and all that happens when I click the download button is it opens the video in a new window.

    Nehelp would be fantastic!

  53. brad says:

hmm..if you are using mozilla firefox, to download video embedded videos for youtube or streetfire, just let the video buffer in your browser..after the buffering completes, u can get the file from the mozilla default cache folder…locate the file, then add .flv extension after the file name…
next step is to download a proper flv player and voila…u had successfully downloaded the video to ur hdd…

  54. Paul says:

    hey all,

i have a quick question, i’ve used the same method above to try and save youtube.com videos but all i get is the flash video player but not the flash video as such. I’ll little lost in how to save the movie short of actually capturing the movie in screen capture program. Any suggestions?,

  55. Derek says:

short of creating a video tutorial to make this easier to understand, i’m not sure what the problem is for users.

make sure that you have the greasemonkey script installed properly (you’ll know because a red bar will be visible at the top of the video screen with the words “Save As” to download Flash video. right-click on that link and select “save link as…” from the contextual menu. in the save file dialogue prompt, rename the video to match the title of the clip and replace the .php files extension with .flv.

  56. Krista says:

Does this work with google video and youtube?

SCIFI.COM’s Video Player won’t work if you don’t have the Windows operating system. When NBC Universal (which owns the SCIFI channel) chose to go with an embedded Video Player, it decided us non-Windows people weren’t worth the effort of making the embedded Video Player compatible with non-Windows operating systems. Just thought you should know.

I just figured out how to save the lynda.com videos
Download the download embedded 0.4 extension on the firefox page.
when the video tutorial comes up click on the red arrow in the bottom right
    select download all cache content
it will namethe file stream.ahsx simply rename the file whater you want (flash1.mov)
it must berenamed to the mov extension or it won’t play in quicktime
