How-To: Download embedded videos

Please note that the following will only work for Firefox users.
Have you ever found yourself watching an embedded video within a website? More importantly, have you ever found yourself wondering how to download that same video to keep locally for later viewing? Follow these easy steps and you’ll have the ability to download embedded movie files from your ‘favorite’ websites (poon).
- First, install the GreaseMonkey Firefox extension from here.
This extension allows users to “customize” websites they visit on the
fly with special scripts. After installing, restart your Firefox
browser. After the restart, go up to Tools in the menu bar. You
should now have the following menu options: “Install user script”,
“Manage user scripts”, and “User script command”. - Next, we have to install the GreaseMonkey user scripts. You can find a growing list of scripts here. To download embedded movies, you’ll want to install the Unembed
script. Click on the Unembed link. Doing so will open a page with what
appears to be plain text (the actual script code). Go to Tools > Install user script. A “Install user script” window will pop up. Click OK to install. - Finally,
navigate to a website with an embedded video file. After installing the
GreaseMonkey Unembed script, you should now see a [download] link at
the bottom of the movie file allowing you to save the file locally on
your own computer.
You have now seen first hand the power of GreaseMonkey user scripts. If you checked the script site, you most likely noticed the many choices to improve your browsing experience. Check back often, the options for user submitted scripts grows each day. A few of the scripts that I use are: [Google About.com remover], [Gmail: Adding persistent searches], and [Gmail: Mailto links to Gmail compose].

To download protected mov clips (or anything else awkward for that matter):
1. Right click download greasemonkey link
2. select copy link location
3. open network stream in VLC (videolan) media player
4. paste in link location copied earlier
5. right click on clip
6. goto miscellaneous, then clip info thingy
7. copy URI link in clip info
8. open in Xi netxfer net transport
Does anyone know how to download videos from AOL.com? Such as AOL Sessions videos, live performances, music videos, etc? I’ll literally pay money for this.
For anyone who wants to download anything off youtube, or any other major video host site:
1. Go to http://keepvid.com
2. Get the video URL.
3. Select the video site locator [this makes downloads faster, not all sites listed]
4. Paste in the target box
And the site’s generator produces the link.

I tried it and when i press download to download the video, the video goes into a different tab, is this normal? I don’t even think it downloaded I can’t find it in my computer hELLLPP!

the SWF file downloaded from this site (just 1 file is there neus.swf shows a blank screen, while at the site U can watch some lovely Pictures…

To download protected mov clips:
01. View the source code and get the path of the mov
02. Copy link location
03. Start VLC (videolan) media player
(download Videolan free off the web)
04. File>>Open network stream
05. Paste in link location from step #2
05. Right-click on clip
06. Goto miscellaneous, then clip info thingy
07. Copy URI link in clip info (it will be a little modified…this is the true URI)
08. Open Microsoft Front Page
09. In Normal, make a text (hyper) link to thte above URI in step 7
10. click Preview tab at bottom and then right-click the hyperlink and choose “Save as”
Now you’ll have the mov on your PC!
Can’t seem to get video from http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?id=1528073&sdm=web&qtw=480&qth=300
because they use a quicktime .cab object which embeds the video and uses auth codes etc. Any ways to get this video would be appreciated, as it’s the only copy i’ve been able to find on the net.

I opened the file with a simple editor, and in this file don’t show the where is the movie .flv

trying to download this video, i have tried many methods, but cant find one that works, flash media catcher wont work, changing the settings in FF to download wmv files wont work, all i get is asx.aspx…not the wmv file i want….anyone with advice, i would appreciate it…

When i click on the greese money [download] link that shows up at the bottom of the video on streetfire.net, it opens up a new tab, and then begins buffering a shockwave flash video, but sits there buffering for hours and does nothing…

I downloaded Grease Monkey for Firefox. Under tools, I see “Manage User Scripts and New Scripts, but not the Install scripts mentioned above. Also, when I went to one of the links to see “Find User Scripts”, I got the following message: “A malicious user is uploading scripts that steal cookies.” What does this mean? What should do about this?
In either case, I couldn’t download embedded video at TV land. Don’t know if it is protected somehow? Thanks-Jorge
hey, can someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have downloaded FIrefox followed by GreaseMonkey Firefox extension, followed by Unembed script. But now the problem is this…..when I go to the embed clips website which contain academic clips in QUICKTIME (****.mov) format), i could watch the streaming clip which opens in Quicktime player and at the bottom right hand corner I could see the [Download] icon…..huraaayyyyyyy!!!!
BUT, the unfortunate thing is, when you click on this [download] icon, a larger version of Quicktime player will open, within the website and all what i see is the blue cricle of Quicktime player!!!!!! no clips is playing…..nothing is happening what so ever…..Can someone please help me on this?????

ok, i got when i follow the instructions i get the download link, it is only like 16kb long though, obviously not the whole movie.. do I take this file and use it to download the actual movie? what do I do next?
I was having trouble downloading an embedded WMV video using the methods described in this site. I believe that I successfully installed the Greasemonkey Unembed because the download link would show up for the flash ads on the page but not under the video itself. Page Info wouldn’t work either because it would just open and stream the video directly on WMP, I believe this is because the video is actually referred. But then I found out that VLC actually has a Transcoding Wizard…
Just copy the url from Page Info or for WMVs you could right-click on the video for a menu and select properties and copy the location so you wouldn’t have to pick it out from a list. Open VLC and stream the video from there then click File>Wizard and pick Transcode/Save to file pick the file out from “Existing playlist item” and choose your settings and transcode. However, VLC can’t save the file to WMV and I had to use MPEG format, and remember to add the extension (*.mpg) when saving.
Getting Lynda.com videos:
After following the steps outlined above…
I just clicked to watch the video then resized the new pop-up window (so I could see the [download] link) then right-click and save to desktop. Works perfectly; I haven’t tried using the files with iPod.
I DOES work on Lynda.com videos, but you will have to resize the video window in order to “un-hide” the download link, and then you have to RIGHT CLICK the download link, and select “save link as” in order to bring up the “save as…” dialog box.
Jeff’s comment is only partly helpful as the save as link won’t donwnload the whole movie.
