For the technically daring:
There’s been quite a lot of buzz around the blogs the last couple of weeks with people seeing the return of the pop-ups and pop-unders. It looks to me like the overwhelming majority of these are from plug-ins, mostly flash.
A number of pundits and bloggers have been wondering aloud whether or not we’ll be able to keep up with the pop-up spammers now that more of them are focused on us. Well, we shipped 1.0 with the capability to block these pop-ups and pop-unders but we didn’t enable it because we were concerned about breaking legitimate uses. If you’d like to turn it on, it’s a fairly simple change — and would be absolutely trivial for us to enable once we determine whether or not lots of websites are depending on the feature.
To block pop-ups from plugins, open your Firefox 1.0 or 1.0.1 browser, type about:config in the address field. Right-click in the resulting config page somewhere and select New -> Interger. Type privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins in the resulting dialog, hit OK, type 2 in the next dialog and you’re all set.
This pref can actually take three values:
* 0: open allowed
* 1: the opened windows are treated as popups, but they’re allowed to open (we limit the number of these types of popups)
* 2: the window is a popup, block itIf you turn this on, please let me know how it works for you so we can make the decision about offering it to users who aren’t likely to be hacking in about:config.

I agree. Needs to be standard for 1.next (or implemented using a Kill What Popup Types? section in the Options). Fight the popup!
great tip – didn’t know about:config before this. THX!

That’s new “integer”…
Cheers to the death of IE and all the scum spammers whose windows I’ll always close.
Hello,
I entered the “privacy.popups.disable” as you instructed in the new Firefox 1.0.2 and it works perfectly. Here is a site where you can test your popup blocker: http://www.kephyr.com/popupkillertest/test/test13.html Thanks for the tip!

Firefox Popups?
If you use Firefox (and if you don’t, and you’re reading this… GET FIREFOX)
You know it has a built in AWESOME pop-up blocker (among other awesome treats). Well, it seems that certain sites have figured out how to get around the pop-up blocker. By…
I already installed and uninstalled Firefox several times in order to stop the popups from the site it tself! I deleted everything and checked all of my temp folders etc. and started over numerous times! I like the browser but it’s really annoying to have the site that is protecting you from popups to be popping up about its own self! I almost installed the Thunderbird but changed my mind and stopped the installation so maybe that’s why it does it but it did it before to. I asked my tech and he never heard of anyone having this problem!
Thank you for any assistance to stop these popups as would like to keep using Firefox due to the good things I have heard about the program!
I was getting more and more frustrated by the recent rash of popups with new releases of Firefox. Glad I stumbled across this advice, which seems to work fine.
This is aboslutely a parameter that needs to come out to the Menu level in the product so the ordinary user can set it.
