This post was published 4 years 8 months 23 days ago and its content may not be valid anymore.A Botswana beauty pageant crowned 32-year-old Cynthia Leshomo “Miss HIV” on Sunday in a contest aimed at fighting the stigma of the killer disease that has infected more than a third of the population.
Side note: I am not poking fun at the disease, I am poking fun at the pageant, and MAYBE the winners last name.

This beauty pageant is not something to make fun of. There is a reason for the existence of this pageant. That reason is the fact that there are women in Africa who are afraid to even speak up about being HIV postive because if they were to, people that they know may think they were doing something wrong when they weren’t. That is why they have this pageant, to vanish the stigma that HIV has. You need to remember that people in other countries don’t have the same rights that you and I do and our culture is different from theirs. That especially goes for women, there are women in Africa who don’t have a choice in getting married when they are older, also they can’t make the decision to use a condom while having sex, that is up to the man to decide that, in most cases men don’t wear them, which adds to the cases of HIV. So before you go ahead and decide to poke fun at something you don’t know about, I highly suggest you get your facts straight.
