  21. LGR says:

One thing I’d really love to know:

Does it work without a monitor, keyboard, and mouse? For use as a home file/web/print/media/server via VNC for example.

    Thanks.

  22. Dan says:

You need a monitor and keyboard for setup – then it functions fine without it after initial setup

  23. SR says:

cool… it really does operate headlessly. and what is the font you are using for the text in this comments? it is the best kerning of any web-type i have seen

  24. Dan says:

Yes it does – After the first setup, its headless.

  25. dinesh says:

Hi all, Now looking at how the mini was unpacked, i have a question here. Is it possible to buy a RAM chip at a normal computer vendor and upgrade it yourself? I mean why do you need to pay more to get it installed from apple?
    cheers

  26. derek says:

    dinesh,

apple recommends that y ou order the ram and have it installed by them. however, a quick look around the net turns up results showing that the ram slot is easily accessible making ram installation possible. the difficult part will be the removal of the cover.

  27. dimplemonkey says:

Very nice. I just ordered mine through Target to get the $50 discount! My mini will be in the kitchen, hooked into a small flip down screen under the cabinet with an EyeTV Wonder USB 2.0. Soon I will be able to surf the net wirelessly and have a Tivo-like device!

  28. dman says:

great buy! did you get the wireless kit built in? thats what im getting as you can install the ram easily, but the wireless kit is another thing.

  29. Dan says:

I did get the kit installed…

  30. DeeKay says:

    About Fans and RAM-Installation:
    Macworld writes:

“One thing that did surprise me about the Mac mini was the noise level, both good and bad. Most of the time the machine is very quiet, basically silent; I expected more regular fan noise given the cramped quarters inside the box. On the other hand, under the heaviest extended loadsâ€â€Â?ripping a number of CDs in a row while performing other processor-intenstive tasks, for exampleâ€â€Â?the fan ramps up to a surprising volume. Nothing compared to the wind tunnel levels of a crashed Power Mac G5, to be sure, but louder than I expected. Similarly, the Mac mini’s optical drive is about as loud as its PowerBook cousinâ€â€Â?it can get noisy when ripping songs in iTunes. (Thankfully, it’s nearly silent when watching DVDs.)”

“the official word from Apple is that the Mac mini’s RAM is user-upgradeable, “unless you break something when you open it.â€ÂÂ? The fact that Apple is saying that explicitly might give you pause… and it probably should. I opened my mini today, and although it’s not as tough to upgrade as some Macs I’ve used (can you say, “Power Macintosh 8100?â€ÂÂ?), it’s nowhere near as easy as the iMac G5.”

“So how difficult was the process? Once I figured out the trick to popping the top, so to speak, not bad at all. But discovering that trick was a bit sketchy. At first I tried using thicker putty knives, which not only didn’t fit in the gap easily, but would have likely damaged the Mac mini’s plastic and aluminum surfacesâ€â€Â?cosmetically, that isâ€â€Â?if I’d forced them. And even when I found putty knives that fit, I was at first quite nervous that I was going to break my brand new computer trying to pry it open; it took a bit of discipline to force myself to press hard enough to get the desired results. Now that I’ve done it, it won’t be difficult to do it again, but I’m not sure I’d recommend the procedure to some of my less-gadgety-inclined friends and relatives. (Read: I’ll be doing most of the upgrades.)

That being said, the process wasn’t bad, and it’s certainly better than paying Apple $425 for a 1GB RAM upgrade when you can get a 1GB DIMM online for $160 to $180 and install it yourself (or pay a service provider $50 or so to do it for you). Plus this way you can keep or sell the original 256MB chip.”

  31. dman says:

you can buy and install any ram you want, however applestore employees claim the ram apple uses is high quality. i don’t know if thats true, but if you stick with the better-known suppliers like crucial, kingston, etc. (i dont work for crucial but i’ve used them) you should be good to go. i would however avoid generic ram, as i have had nothing but problems (and blue screens of death) when i used them. check here:

  41. []DETE says:

i want one. if i had one i would give it a “nice” home.

  42. Andrew Le says:

I like the Mac mini concept, but the main drawback I see is the use of a laptop hard drive, which is just “slow,” compared to a regular 3.5″ desktop HD.

Also, the requirement of a USB keyboard and mouse kinda sucks, since I have PS/2 style mouse and keyboards galore.. (yes, I know you can buy a $10-15 USB to PS/2 adaptor, but still)… oh well…..

If Apple ever changes the hard drive to a standard IDE 3.5″ hard drive, I would be considering buying this Mac.. otherwise, I’ll just wait until the G5 comes down in price a bit. eheheh…

    Cheers.

There’s another strategy … if you have multiple systems on your desk and they all have monitors and you don’t want to have multiple keyboards ‘n meeces, you should take a look at KMremoteControl from http://www.derman.com.

Simply put, KMremoteControl is a software keyboard/mouse switcher (i.e., KVM without the “M” part). I’ve been using KMremoteControl for quite some time (in a different setup) and it works really well. Hope this helps.

  44. Ben says:

I found a 1GB stick of RAM from newegg for $154:
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-141-166&depa=0

There is one comment left by a previous customer saying it worked with the mac mini ….. who knows if that’s trustworthy though. It’s non-ecc and unbuffered/unregistered. Any thoughts on if this is a good buy? Any better deals out there that people have found for quality memory?

  45. derek says:

    check out deals at outpost.com.

imo if you’re that paranoid about sticking ‘questionable’ raminto your apple computer, i recommend ordering from someone reputable like crucial.

  49. Michael says:

I\’m getting a Mac Mini in August, Same wireles kit execpt 1.25gh model. Is 256mb of ram sufficent? I can\’t wait!

  50. Dan says:

No, you really need 512 – Espically with 10.4!

  51. SK Brown says:

Great pics! I’m sort of curious: are the disks included exclusive to the mini, or can you use them on other Macs? For example, do you get Tiger on seperate disks like a retail package, or is it (them?) a specific mini setup/restore disk? I.E. one that won’t let you install it on say, a PowerBook you just might have laying around?
