Awesome Vintage Tech Ads

If you love this post… We just posted 116 More Vintage Ads!

You can laugh now, but some years ago you were getting a very nice deal by buying a $3398 10MB hard drive.

A sexy modem? Come on!

Two are always better than one. At least according to this 1978 ad from Technico Inc. TMS9900.

Remember Elvira, Mistress of the Dark? Besides appearing on TV in features like Elvira’s Movie Macabre Halloween Special, Elvira also invited Computerworld readers to “cut through paper-based CASE [computer-aided software engineering] methods with LBMS” software.

This ad won’t make any sense if you’re not a follower of the TV series Lost. However, if you are, you’ll find it amusing…

It’s small and light at ‘only’ 11+ lbs.

“With WordStar, you have a true screen image of what your printout will look like before you print it! With WordStar, you’ll erase, insert, delete and move entire blocks of copy.” Gee, it’s like magic!

Would you say this ad was a little sexist?

Every Kid Should Have an Apple after School.

In the future, everyone will use floppy disks.

In the ad “Take the Multi and Run,” the actor uses a beautiful plastic tie. :)

Ahh memories. I used to stare at that Apple IIc ad, wishing it was sitting on my desk.

And later I remember begging my parents to help me buy a $600 RAM upgrade for my Apple IIgs. How much RAM could you get for an Apple IIgs in the 80′s? ONE MEGABYTE. I never did get that RAM upgrade…

  • Johan Barnard

Did nobody notice the fake ad?

“Dharma Initiative Computers. Helping you enter the code 4 8 15 16 23 42 every 108 minutes to prevent the end of the world. Except it’s not really the world but limbo.”

    Namaste.

The embarrassing part was my wife and I spent all day trying to hook up our first computer. Our 12 year old daughter came home and in five minutes had us online. It is now 14 years later. Thank God for our children.

  • DGL

Wow, I remember a lot of those. Yikes is that a gray hair in my beard???

  • Kitfox

Telex operator looks like 7 of 9 ….. Ummmmmm

  • Janet Berman

I can remember our first commodore 64 and also the first IBM Display Writer in my office.

  • Haerviu

My Apple IIgs had 8m RAM, a 9MHz processor, a 250 Mb hard drive, and a card that let me run MS Dos software. Then it died.

So you’ve got what should be authentic old advertisements that I’ve seen and you’ve mixed in the Dharma one which I assume is not vintage. Is that a wise move? Won’t we now doubt the authenticity of all the rest?

Looks like the Dharma Initiative is a clever ruse, not an actual ad; did you guys mean to slip it in there as a joke, or did you think it was a real print ad from the ’70s?

Here’s a collection of Dharma Initiative ads: http://gizmodo.com/5191356/if-the-dharma-initiative-took-out-magazine-ads

  • Dan

It was as a joke…. If you really want to see a ton of old ads check the latest post!

    wicked!

  • David B

That Wordstar ad looks to be using an ADM 5. As text-only monitors went, those things were impressively fast.

Just saw this! Cant believe that so much has changed in so little time. I used to sell a 8bit Intel based processor with NO Hard Drives for Rs 350,000 (1981 prices when petrol was less than Rs 4/lit.) The RAM available was only 64KB (not MB) and no OS concept! Both data and prog area was just under 16KB.
