Get the Magic Trackpad to Work on Windows Without Any Hacking

So first we started with the Magic Mouse, now its possible to get Apple’s Magic Trackpad (the other $70 wonder) to work with Windows – thanks to a hidden update.

A little hackery from Apple’s Boot Camp Update the Magic Trackpads driver was extracted via WinRar resulting in a 32bit version and a 64bit version that you can install on any ordinary Windows PC that will enable all the scrolling ‘magic’ of the Magic Trackpad.

Works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 computers.

Download the 32 and 64bit drivers

    Fantastic Dan

Thank you, I am just about to buy a Magic Trackpad. Being able to use it for both PC and Apple is just a bonus.

Thanks! I get mine tomorrow for my work PC and you’ve saved me so much futzing around. One internet beer for you!

And when all is said and done…You are still facing a Windows computer… Well, at least the winbois are acknowledging the superiority of Apple’s hardware and driver designs.

The download links to the Magic Mouse Windows XP drivers on your previous post (http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2009/11/14588/) aren’t working. How can I download those drivers?

Just started on a new job. Got a Windows XP machine :( Missing using my Magic Mouse, but cant find the 32 bit driver. A link please??

Installed the driver and was able to pair with my Windows XP machine. However, the trackpad only works as a one-button mouse. There is no two-finger scrolling and no right click, which makes it pretty useless. Has anyone actually gotten two-finger gestures to work on an XP machine (the ones Apple says are possible on a Mac running Bootcamp http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4273 )?

Reinstall the driver… That adds all the gestures.

Thanks – I re-installed the driver several times and still no gestures. Am I the only one that cannot get this to work in XP?

I have managed to get Magic Trackpad working, but it’s unusable without being able to change the settings. There’s no control panel (obviously) – getting that to work, or finding out how to change the settings would be essential, since tap-to-click is turned on by default (I’d prefer it to be off) and tap-drag-select is also on by default (so whenever I try to scroll down a webpage, I end up selecting part of the page).

Anyone have ideas how to configure the Magic Trackpad on Windows 7 (non boot camp)?

  • Charlie

I’m having the same experience – can’t seem to find a way to get it working, and I’m pretty sure the driver is installed correctly. Any luck on your end?

  • Dave

Thanks for this…I installed it to enable the Apple Magic Mouse on my Aspire 5745PG running Windows 7 64Bit so that move, right, and left click are enabled.

I thought that maybe…just maybe scroll would also work on the Magic mouse using the Magic Trackpad drivers, but, it doesn’t. Can someone please post both the 32 bit and 64 bit drivers for the Magic Mouse? The original link is broken.

    Appreciate it.
    Thanks

I got mine working under Windows XP; at first, I had the same problem as most other XP users: the Magic Trackpad only works as a one-button mouse.

However, this is what I have done to make my Magic Trackpad work:
    1) Installed Binary.AppleWirelessTrackpad_Bin.exe
    2) Uninstalled the original bluetooth driver of my USB bluetooth dongle (It is the Toshiba bluetooth stack)
Windows XP automatically detected my USB bluetooth dongle and installed the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers that is included with Windows XP (Generic Bluetooth Radio and Microsoft Bluetooth Emulator)
    3) Paired the Magic Trackpad using “0000″ as passcode

Now, the Magic Trackpad’s other functions are enabled, including tap-to-click, right click…
Note that in Device Manager the Apple Magic Trackpad driver is installed.

However, I don’t find the Magic Trackpad as “magical” as I first expected it to be.

Please drop me a note here if it works for you.

    Enjoy your Apple Magic Trackpad!

    “now its possible” should be:
    “now it’s possible”.

Thank you!! Worked like a charm in Windows 7

I am running a Dell D630 with Windows XP SP3. When you follow the directions verbatim, this thing doesn’t work as advertised. It only has single button click. If you have a Toshiba Bluetooth Stack (the driver package) you MUST uninstall the Toshiba drivers and force windows to use the default Microsoft drivers. There is a file called bth.inf in the folder C:\WINDOWS\inf. This is the Microsoft driver. This file must include your bluetooth model for the windows driver to work. If it doesn’t include your exact model, you can open the windows control panel and go system, then open your bluetooth device and click properties. In there are several parameters called “ID” which should list the same model number. Using this info, you can craft your own entry in the microsoft bth.inf file and ta-da! (At least it worked for me, and I’m a dumb civil engineer, so how hard could it be!)

Hi, The magic mouse download links are broken. Can you fix and advise as to the new URL?

    Thanks

I’ve successfully installed the Magic Mouse on my Lenovo specifing as Passkey ’0000′. Now the M.M. works (left and right click working) but the scroll does not work.

Anyone of you know how to enable this precious feature?

I had it working partially, only with left click. Brian’s trick works.

I have a BT-253 bluetooth card in my netbook, and it had a Widcomm driver installed.

Before uninstalling, Device Manager, found your bluetooth hardware (in the same group of bluetooth enumarator), clicked on it. Go to details tab, choose Hardware Ids, and take note of that (you don’t need more than one of that).

After oppened the c:\windows\inf\bth.inf and add this entry in the device section (any entry is good, i used Broadcom.NT.5.1). Add here a line as follow:

    [Broadcom.NT.5.1]
    My BT253 Rev 0241= BthUsb, USB\Vid_0b05&pid_b700&Rev_0241

(remember to change the part USB\Vid_0b05&pid_b700&Rev_0241
by the entry you had took note on your hardware)

After that, uninstall your bluetooth software (in my case, Widcomm drivers).

Reboot machine, turn on your bluetooth, it will ask you for drivers. Choose “advanced”, point to c:\windows\inf directory to search, and proceed.

    Voilá.

I have just installed the above driver and have successfully paired my Vista PC to my new Trackpad. I appear to have all two-button mouse functionality which is fine for current needs. Thank you Mr or Mrs Silence.

  • Axel

Everybody that have problem to install the Magic Trackpad, I solved my problem with bying a new bluetooth adapter to my computer. Since the buildin Broadcom card did not detected the Trackpad as a correct device, but with the Deltaco card it worked perfectly direct

  • Timo

I can get the Trackpad to pair and be recognized by my Win 7(64bit) correctly, but I just can’t get windows to accept any input from it. Driver installed correctly and windows recognizes the pad too.
    Any suggestions?
