The Obligatory Android Post

Now that the Android cat is out of the bag, what are your thoughts on it? Is the OS finished? iPhone killer? My initial reaction, has some really good potential! You al better believe I am scrambling to get a review unit in ASAP.

Don’t waste you time dan. It’s not even a real google phone. What I mean is all they did was slap a google logo on a old ass HTC and throw in some crappy software.

I imagine the people who will like this also like linux.

a few reasons why people shouldn’t waste their time.

    – cheap plastic and UGLY
    – no 3.5mm headphone jack (uses some stupid mini usb jack)
    – Still no flash support
    – software lag (ex. scrolling, zooming ect.)
    – will not sync with OSX (mail, ical, itunes)
    – no muti-touch (pinching)
    – it’s Google people! (Um I’m sure they won’t know every keystroke and site you visit)

    enjoy:)

The only area where I see this trumps the iPhone is Gmail push. It doesn’t even have multitouch. Bleh.

Another big red X is the fact that it doesn’t support ActiveSync out of the box. Remember when everyone cried like babies when the iPhone didn’t have it?

Personally, I’m amazed more and more each day by my iPhone. This certainly isn’t granting a second look from me.

stop being fan boys, seriously… you inserted an Apple logo in your damn comment. Android’s first release is on a shitty phone, what do you think is going to happen when someone hacks the iPhone hardware to support Android?…

I don’t usually pull moves like this but… I literally can’t wait to say “I told you so”.

also… how many articles have we read about iPhone developers getting shunned from the App Store even though their apps are quality work because of a non-compete agreement in the Apple Contract… I’ll be sure to sit back and chuckle to myself next time a quality App gets denied because Apple thinks it might cut into their bottom line when it comes time to report profits.

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Apple products… I have a Mac Pro, and Mac Book Pro and bought an iPhone on launch day a year ago, *almost* picked up a 3G version if it wouldn’t have required a contract. But wearing blinders regarding competing or new technology for seemingly weak and half hearted reasons is just…. well… not forward thinking and wallowing in ignorance.

I totally agree with Doc. It isn’t worth it. Add to the fact that there isn’t even a built in video playing app, and the whole thing just feels unfinished.

Also, has anyone considered the fact that an entirely open marketplace for apps will likely lead to a proliferation of nasty malware apps at some point? Imagine if you will an awesome game that gets 250,000 downloads. While you play, it starts collecting your browser history and contacts list as a background process, and then sends them off to whomever.

The opportunities for identity theft scare the hell out of me.

Well I went to t-mobile and the opening song made me want the phone. Did not know that the black angels were mainstream now.

All kidding aside, I will withhold judgment until I can hold one. How “linux” is android. I have a Zaurus and if I can load stuff on this like I can on on linux handhelds then I will not be concerned with what is loaded on the demo phone at the moment.
