Dell Mini Introduced With A Not So Mini Price

The the eagerly anticipated Dell mini has finally been announced with a not so mini price tag; over $460.00 all in. Almost more then the lowest priced full featured laptop Dell offers.

The little guy features an Intel Atom processor and a 1024×600 LED-backlit screen (interesting choice) with 4, 8 and 16GB SSD options. Dell claims the unit will have 3 hours of battery life. Currently only the Windows XP version is available now for $399, in black or white (Special premium for the White unit). But have no fear, the $349 Ubuntu mini are “a few weeks” away.

The neat thing about the Mini is that the atom processor is I believe the first one in a netbook to have hyper threading enabled. That little processor is so damn cool.

Still no firewire, when will they learn?

these are sexy lil bastards that’s for damn sure…. still think I may jump on an EEEPC 1000 myself tho.

I’m tempted to get one or ask for an eval unit from my Dell rep. My only hesitation is how well it can really handle XP. And considering that a “cheap” laptop generally costs only $100 more, I’m not sure it’s that great of a deal.

@Ian: They are a good deal until you add XP to them. I think I’d still with the Asus Eee, remove the stock Xandros-based Linux, and install Ubuntu-eee. (http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/) We’ve got Windows users using it and VERY happy.

The “great deal” is that you don’t have to lug around a standard-sized laptop. Less weight, less attraction of theft (if it’s inside your luggage.)
