NetShare… Buy Into The Mystery? [Update: Taken Offline Again]

Dan, my good friend. Alas, I finally have my iPhone, and I bought into the mystery of NetShare. I must say, it works as advertised, and is working wonders for my non-WiFi moments. I’d recommend it.

Yup, bought it and it works well. Web pages load snappily on my Macbook and gMail is quick. Because of the nature of the network configuration needed, it’s not for entry level computer users. But it’s fairly easy to setup for those with some tech savvy. Is it this application worth a onetime fee of $9.99 to get 3G data access on your Macbook or Powerbook? Duh! Yes!!

I bought it today. It may be an “official” app (for now), but it’s a kludge/hack. I assume we’ll see someone replicate this as a free app at some point, assuming Apple allows it to exist. Not sure how useful it’ll be for me since my iPhone is EDGE and I’ve got a 3G laptop card. Damn impulse purchase got me again.

I have not bought it yet, but it looks exactly the same as what you get on a jailbroken phone with 3proxy or even just “ssh -D 1080 root@iphone.local“. The ease of it has me thinking about buying it, and the guys that make it are the ones that build Installer.app, so it may be that this helps to fund more iphone hacking…

I think it was well worth the $10, I just hope AT&T doesn’t drop the hammer on it.

I’m getting an error saying that it’s not available in the U.S. store.

Yeah, apparently these apps are against some kind of agreement Apple put out for developers looking to make apps for the store.

I just snagged it about 4 hrs ago, and I found this article on AppleInsider that will help everyone out in the set-up process. Will try this tomorrow at iPhoneDevCamp San Francisco!

My problems that has nothing to do with NetShare however. It only works if the iPhone works which is rarely. The iPhone 2.0.1 and iTunes 7.7.1 is so totally unstable it crashes everyday and needs a restore. Apps quit constantly, all of them doesn’t matter which one. Once one app quits they all do. Restarts and hard resets do not help. Only a total restore is needed. Sometimes when an app quits it kills the iPhone and you are left with a Apple logo.

iTunes takes forever to do backups on the iPhone that wind up useless as when you try to do a restore using a backup, 9 times out of ten iTunes tells you it is corrupted and you need to restore as a new iPhone.

iTunes never knows when you need updates on the apps and is wrong most of the time. If you do and update with iTunes of an app, it downloads the app and recreates the file instead of overwriting it. Take a look in your Mobile Application folder and you will find tons of files building up with incremented file names like AIM, AIM 1, AIM 2, etc.

The iPhone is a fantastic device when it works, which is never more than a day if you install any apps and try to use them. Beware installing, updating or deleting apps directly on the iPhone very often will kill it leaving you with the white Apple logo of death and no phone at all. Such a pleasant experience when it happens in the middle of the day leaving you without even a cell phone. Make a great Apple logo flashlight!

I returned the iPhone for replacement, I synced it with different Macs, tried loading less app, different apps, no apps. Nothing really helps. This is the buggiest products Apple has probably ever released.

The Genius Bars and the Apple support forums are loaded with iPhone problems so I am not alone!

The app is not allowed due to the AT&T agreement regarding tethering. I don’t see how this app could not be sold in Norway and other countries where cellphone subscriptions allow tethering.
