Experiencng Facebook Spam?

I consider Facebook and MySpace to be two different type of sites. MySpace is more for the “I don’t care about society” type person while Facebook is for a more sophisticated crowd. I could be wrong. I don’t and won’t use MySpace, and if I had to use a MySpace-like site I would o with Virb. I saw MySpace as a breeding ground for spam and a sort of “don’t care” attitude by the people behind the site. I mean, any time I happen to come across the page for an artist I like, I see the comments with a bunch of spam. Facebook is different, at least I would like to believe that. Imagine my surprise when I saw a friend of mine posted this message on my wall. Facebook spam isn’t particularly new and I think it’s safe to say it isn’t rampant either but I am a bit disappointed this could happen. I am assuming that my friend’s account could have been hacked and this was sent out to all friends, or more plausibly an application added would have done it. Anyone with info on this?

    I think I can agree with you to some extent on the difference between the two sites. Myspace really is a breeding ground for spam and seems behind facebook as far as some things go (applications and status updates). I have both but simply for keeping in touch with good friends from that past.

    On a side note I’d really like a clarification of “instant results”. I mean that could be quite terrifying…

    Yeah.. I’ve been getting that same ‘ad’ for a few weeks. I finally contacted my friend, he had no idea. That was my guess too, that his account got hacked, possibly via an app? Either way, I share in your disappointment.

    I think it’s cute how some people draw a philosophical distinction between FB and MS.

    It’s unlikely to have been by an app, but I suppose that an app could redirect you to a phishing site.

    I have also experianced the same mail from someone I trust and he is at a loss about it. Seems like FB has some security issues to resolve. My mate is a techie so I am assuming that he has no handing out his password everywhere.

    I currently work for a larger social network which will remain nameless… and I just want to point out, this is some of the hardest stuff to combat.

    I understand you’re upset about spam and phishing… as we all are, but you should be the guys under the hood trying to stop it… not easy, we’re actually developing an artificial intelligence system that will rate and rank users for likely hood of being a spammer or scammer… it’s not an easy problem to solve, and just when you think you solve it… the scammers/spammers evolve.

    And on a final note… there is no patch for human stupidity… how are we suppossed to stop an idiot from clicking on a link and willingly typing in their username and password?!…

    I started noticing facebook spam last week and after a google search found that the application Secret Crush installed spyware and facebook has been battling with it since.

    People that believe that Facebook has less spam than myspace need to get off their high horse and take more notice. As a former Facebook user I got way more useless spam from Facebook then I ever have on Myspace. The people on Facebook are not more sophisticated, rather less advanced when it comes to creating a good looking profile page. Yes there are many myspace profiles that look bad, but atleast they give you a choice, unlike Facebook profiles that are all the same and are clogged up with useless time wasting applications. Privacy is an even bigger issue on Facebook as everyone in your friend list knows what what you have been doing. Plus they control how many people you add to your network. For a business you need to have no restrictions on how many people you can invite.

    Are you kidding? Spammers attacked MySpace because it was the most popular social network. Now that Facebook is growing and overtaking MySpace’s position, wouldn’t it make sense that spammers would find a way to hack and use Facebook to the same ends? Please.

    As for any sn capacity to care, you can only put so many resources to fighting spam. If you building on the fly and catching up as you grow, you implement what you can and when you can…. not all at once.

    Also, doesn’t it seem logical that the developers at Facebook learned a lot of lessons for MySpace. Eventually, a new SN will come along and surpass them both.

    Just wait and see.
