Digsby – Manage Your Online Life
Let me first say that this program is highly recommended – I’m not just writing about it because I’m trying to reach a quota (we get 5 cents per blog post) but because it’s something I’m actually using and really, really like.
Digsby is an all-encompassing program (think pidgin, Trillian, Adium) on steroids as it handles not just IM accounts, but email and social networks as well. While Trillian, and even Adium may have some but not all these features, the execution of Digsby sets it apart from the competition. Aesthetically pleasing, Digsby is excellent for people who want to be notified of every email you get in your multiple email accounts, stay on top of your multiple IM accounts and social networks.
A very notable feature of the program is the way it tastefully handles notifications, with a pop-up on the left of your screen (location can be changed to any corner) which, for instant messages allows you to reply from within the pop up. Ignore the pop up and it goes away. It’s very effective for when you want to reply to people’s messages and not lose track of what you are doing.
This is what would happen if Meebo did a desktop application. I’m a big fan and I think you will be too.
For Facebook users, there is also a widget you can add to your profile allowing people to talk to you through Digsby which works well, similar to Meebo’s “Meebo me” widget.
Mac and Linux support should be coming along soon, keep up to date on that here.
Want to try it out on your own? Of course you do! Download the client and install. When prompted, you will need to make an account and put in an invite code. Use the code uneasysilence
I was told the program will remain free, but there may be a paid version down the road.
Chats are not encrypted but it will be coming soon.
The program is in open beta, so if you have stuff you want done to improve it you can more than do so now.
Let us know what you think of the program.
