AT&T Boosts DSL Speeds, Still SLOW!

We are with Covad. I would not give a dime to the AT&T thugs. We get an upgraded service 1.5 meg down and 768k upload.

i switched to bellsouth/att from charter and it has been perfect. i have the 6mbit/512kbit plan (or something around that). my latency for online gaming is great too, rarely going above 50ms on halfway decent servers, and sticks to around 20-30ms when i hit up servers in the SE area of the US. i’ve had charter back when it was tci, then att cable service here in the southeast, and att’s service blows it out of the water. i guess there is always a lesser of two evils. :)

I switched to dslextreme from verizon. I got the 6.0 / 768kps plan and its all been good!

I have Fios and get 20mbs down 5mbs up. It’s awesome and costs the same as the local cable provider (comcast). And Comcast is only offering 6mbs down and 768kps up. It’s a no brainer for most people, to bad most people aren’t aware of what comcast offers.

I have the same plan as Seth on AT&T, 6Mbps/512Kbps. It’s basically my only option where I live, though there’s a fiber service about an hour away that looks pretty spiffy for those customers. Overall, I’d say I’m pretty satisfied. I’ve been on the same static DSL line for over 10 years now (hard to believe, but true), and haven’t had any significant problems (DNS issues, but OpenDNS solved that). I suppose the evil empire does know how to get things done in my neighborhood.

I have Verizon fios – with 15.0 Mbps/2.0 Mbps. It is blazing fast, and way better than Time Warner cable. I was a little disappointed that the prices they advertise were not even available in my area, but it still is not that bad of a price. I pay about $50 a month for the service

I’ve got AT&T DSL and couldn’t be happier (unless it was FIOS of course).

However, during my prime online time which is nowish around 3AM, speeds are crazy, albeit mostly burst speeds:

19mbits down, 1.7 up and all for ~$40-50 (forgot exactly what we pay) but we also have cable TV service.

Atlantic Broadband here (Miami Beach Local ISP) with 5 down (suppossedly going to 10) and 768 up.

Although it being cable it highly fluctuates based on my neighbors activities :(

I’m with Free (French ISP) with 21Mbps Down, 945Kbps Up in Rouen, France, for 29€90 (45$).

And it come with 200 TV channels, 5 VOD services, a free VOIP service, a media center, and a wifi router !

If you wan’t a real ISP just come in France ;-)

I’m with a New Zealand ISP called Orcon (www.orcon.net.nz) – I get full speed down and up ADSL with 20gb for $69 NZD per month ($51 USD at the time of posting). Speedtest wise nationally I get 3 mbit/ 700 kbit internationally I get about 1mbit/600kbit — somehow I live with it :\

i’m in Sweden and had the same speed for the last 4 years, since i moved here: 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. I joke with people that I moved here for the internet speed.

I use Mediacom cable. I get 8Mbps down and 512Kbps up. There’s a max package that offers 10Mbps down and 1Mbps up. Supposedly, their max service will soon be upgraded to 20Mbps down 2Mbps up, which is stellar for the midwest, Iowa more specifically.

I’m very happy with Mediacom, I pay $55/month for 8Mbps down 512Kbps up.

I’m going to give a small equation here, lets see if we can solve it.

I am in MD and I have Verizon Fios. It is a reasonable $45 (ish) and I got it as part of a tv/phone/internet package that is still less than $100 a month. And that includes my “bump-up” in speed to their 15/2 bandwidth.

The DO block incoming port 80 (bummer) but that hasn’t stopped me. And they have given me some piddly amount of online storage (i think it is a gig or so) as part of the deal.

A LOT of folks in our neighborhood jumped to it as soon as it became available and dumped Comcast who had hiked their rate for slower/crappier service three times in 6 months.

I’m with you Dan, I use Optimum with boost, and it is the best service i have had, and any of my friends have.

I average 28000kb/s down, an 4900kbs up, i don’t remember how much it costs, cause we also have cable, and i think we get a discount (we dont have the phone service), but even without the boost, you get like 20000kbs down (i think), i have boost so i can have port 80 open.

also, Optimum’s coustmer support is superb. I’ve had to call them a few times, and i always get a human, and i always get the problem fixed in under 30 mins. On one occasion, someone had to come to my house, and they came at the time i set up, and told me everything that needed to be fixed (i just needed a better cable running to my modem).

I use AT&T in Los Angeles and I’m getting about 5Mbps upload and 600kbps upload. My perceived speed went up appreciably when I upgraded from CAT-5 cable to CAT-6.

Wow – I knew the rest of the developed world spanked the US on this, but from what I’m seeing here it seems the rest of the developed US spanks my region – I’m stuck with Fairpoint (no other options here). This Fairpoint region (like most of their regions) gives 768kb down/256kb up – that’s right, kilobits (not bytes) – for the tiny sum of $45 per month. Of course, Fairpoint recently purchased a small telco not far from here (Kinderhook, NY) – and there they offer 5mb/256mb for $40 per month, same company, but there’s competition there from the cable company.

Since we’ll never get cable here, Fairpoint gets to abuse it’s monopoly power all it wants :( at least it’s (mostly) better than dialup – when it’s working.

Okay, to make u wonder, I tell u what we have to pay here in Dhaka, Bangladesh .

We have to pay $1100 USD for 1 Mbps line. Yes 11 hundred US dollar for 1 megabit connection.

This is so pathetic and I feel to die everytime I try to watch a Youtube video, It never loads .. and oh ya, I pay $15 USD for 96 kbps broadband(i rather call it narrowband) connection.

Now u figure how our country can develop in IT.

Jim, sadly I also know all about “Fair”Point and their completely worthless business. In WNY I used to get Alltell DSL at 768kb/256kb for $30/month, which isn’t too bad — especially when it works all the time and at the advertised speeds. Now I’m outside of Albany, NY, in an area without cable lines, and DSL is the only choice. And for the same reason as you, I’m stuck with this ungodly connection through FairPoint. The best part is that the reason for only FairPoint being available is that they decline to share the telephone lines that they own with any other telco. Unreal. And to top it all off I pay $35 for their alleged 768kb/256kb package and have literally never had anything — be it http, ftp, bittorrent, etc. — move faster than 13kbps. Most useless customer service on the planet. People at the main office are clueless. The whole outfit is garbage. And I’m stuck with them.

Haha, my mistake, I pay $35/month for alleged 256k/128k speeds (which is a complete joke). It’s $40 for 512k/256k, and an absolutely unbelievable $60 for 768k/512k, or what other companies consider STANDARD DSL SPEEDS. It’s as if Leach and his minions are living in some alternate reality where you can sit back and charge whatever you please for your far-below-average services. Screw FairPoint.

I just canceled my “high” speed internet by AT&T 1.5mbps paying $34.99/month. For everyone reading this, never get this. It’s too slow!!
