Google to Buy Sprint

Well, what is a day without some kind of cell phone industry rumor? This rumor, if true, could actually make some sense.

Recent news that Sprint is not going to work with Clearwire to build out a WiMAX network only added to the rumors I have been hearing about Google acquiring Sprint Nextel. On the surface it seems like this would be a bad move for Google but in reality the world’s leading search engine has become so much more than just a website to go to when you want to find a trinket of information… The company now needs a wireless network to allow it to grow in the mobile search and related spaces such as watching YouTube videos on the subway. [...] Google could buy Sprint Nextel and in a complicated maneuver spin it back out as a different company (perhaps a nonprofit) which agrees to work more closely with Google to display ads and distribute its applications. This would allow Google to stay somewhat independent and work with other service providers worldwide.

Another more drastic move would be to buy the beleaguered wireless phone company and start giving all service away for free. In addition the company could reinitiate the ClearWire talks and work with this company and others to blanket the world with a free (or at least ad-subsidized) WiMax network.

Clearly Google has enough in the bank to pull it off and with their interest in the 700 MHz spectrum maybe, just maybe this could be true.

    Hmmm… Maybe that means they can make Sprint cool!!! Last time I was in the store one of the employee’s even said that Sprint is wack… Made me chuckle a little.

    As being a customer of EVERY cell network, I have to say customer service wise Sprint is the WORST – by far.

    T-Mobile is the best with AT&T in a close second.

    I… don’t… know… about Sprint being the worst. I have to say att beats them out by a few service calls.

    I’m with Sprint. Don’t have the slightest problem with the company. I’ve received excellent customer service every time. If they bought Sprint Nextel what the hell would they do with the Nextel side? Google and Direct Connect don’t seem to go hand in hand. One is strinctly about communication while the other is trying to shove a million things at us all at once. Construction workers, plumbers, et cetera have no need for YouTube videos on their phones. The employers would hate it too so another company would replace that whole side of the communications world.

    If Google buys Sprint I’ll switch providers. Nice search engine but I refuse to use it for anything else.

    I just wish phones were just that, phones. I use it to make phone calls and send/receive text messages. Innundation with music, videos, information. I don’t think it’s a beneficial thing.

    a phone is just a phone if you want it to just be that, construction workers are flooding from nextel in my area because of the terrible sprint service our dc minutes went from 4000 a month for one of our foreman down to 100 a month. Sprint (last I saw) was planning on selling the nextel network to the department of defense anyway and even if they weren’t selling it they plan on phasing out iden and using cdma with qchat which nextel bought the rights to years ago. I would hope that google would allow the phone network to be run by people who know what they are doing and then treat xohm as a google project
