Vinyl and Polycarbonate, BFF

A record on one side and a audio CD on the other…sounds like a party to me.

“It means you can slap a three minute single on one side and whole seventy minute LP on the other. The idea is to mix the joys of collecting proper records with digital tunes.

The idea comes from a company called Optimal Media Production, who are hoping more names will get behind the scheme.”

The CD side can hold 70 minutes of music, while the vinyl side, due to the dimensions of the compact disc, can only hold about 3 minutes. As a promotional play, it’s a very cool idea for dance music labels. Fightstar, a rock band on the Gut label, will be the first band to release a single on the VinylDisc format.

    Wow worst idea I’ve heard in a while. Fail. Because we all miss high quality vinyl.

    kinda funny they’d do that since cd’s are a dieing medium.. funny to think though, that vinyl will probably outlive cd’s

    I think its funny when companies think they are creative when they combine two forms of media into one that in reality serves no serious purpose. I see the dance music label appeal but otherwise I bet most youth now a days have no idea what vinyl records even are.

    Eh, novel idea but poorly executed. How many great songs are 3:00 or less? It’s more of a cool concept and will most likely gain no attention. I do think vinyl will out live cds though, I’m about to start a vinyl collection and get some turntables, can’t wait.

    I challenge you guys to go into an independent record store, and see if people have forgotten what vinyl is. In fact, Montreal has more independent music shops that specialize in vinyl records than CDs. And here in London, once a week Spitalfields market is basically a giant vinyl shop.

    We have been in the middle of a vinyl renaissance for years now. It’s not just “dance music labels” – everything from indie rock to hip-hop is pressed to vinyl. In fact, before moving from Montreal to London (hence my example cities), I only bought music on vinyl.

    Mark I can see what you’re saying. Vinyl will always be around. But it will not be around in the same sense that CD’s have been and digital music will be. I think as a society we are getting used to seeing just how much media we can compact into the smallest device possible for easiest possible use. Vinyl is great and I do think it has a value, but I dont see a big market for this.
