UNEASYname change?

I’ve been toying with the idea of changing the sites name for almost a year now. When UNEASYsilence launched it was designed as a personal blog of thoughts that I had, things I saw in my life and my love for all things technology. It was never intended to be a site that was updated daily – never mind 10 times a day with multiple authors scattered across the world. As the years passed and millions of visitors enjoyed our content its clear that there is no silence here.

I love the UNEASYbrand and I am not planning on abandoning it, but I think UNEASYsilence is ready to move to the next level.

The new name I am toying with is UNEASYtech (Don’t worry, I already registered the name). I feel the potential new name is a natural evolution of the brand with a better emphasis on what we do best. Of course there is UNEASYstuff (Again, registered) but that has some *other* connotations to it.

I value the input from our readership greatly and though the decision is ultimately mine I want to know what you think. This change will not be an overnight thing and will probably take a month or two for me to finally make up my mind. In the meantime fill up the comments with your thoughts (We know you have plenty) or drop me an email. -Dan

Honestly i dont think you should change the name. UNEASYtech signifies all tech jargon, and where you do have a lot of posts about tech stuff, i’d say a lot of it has to do with other things. You could always call it UNEASYnews

  • beelz

    Change scares me :(

I like the name UNEASYsilence. It feels like there is a lot of meaning behind it – like you’re bringing something together that is out there, different, or new, but yet, stable enough to discuss and present to the average reader; it’s like a very twisted metaphor. I like it a lot. UNEASYtech, it just doesn’t have that same ring to it (it’s also not as smooth to say, with that hard “t” in there, opposed to silence, which has a nice flow). That’s just my opinion though :P

  • http://www.terminaldigit.com TerminalDigit

UNEASYWeenerKleener or I’m not coming here any more.

  • http://www.uneasysilence.com Dan

I just want peoples thoughts… Nothing final yet.

And yes, I have UNEASYnews.com as well.

  • http://pjllobell.com PVL

I really like UNEASYsilence, but everytime I reccommend the site to a friend they give me a strange look. Meh UNEASYsilence it is.

  • MY ANUS

    your site is great

uneasy tech? … another friggin tech site? engadget #2 ? akibara news #3 ?
DONT CHANGE IT …ELSE …IM ..GONNA …EAT MY ANUS
    thank you.

  • Henry

I’ve always liked the current name and while I also get strange looks when I mention the title I find it fitting for the content contained within. I also agree that the name UNEASYsilence sounds much better than UNEASYtech. I personally dislike the word stuff, and while I fully appreciate that this site is an assortment of all different kinds of things would hate to see such a vague word go in your websites title.

  • http://thespiffylife.com Josh

I like the meaning behind UNEASYsilence, and I know you said you wouldn’t be getting rid of the name/domain, but I think it’s fine the way it is. Although sometimes when things change it is for the best. So who knows. Good luck on the contemplating!

  • Ian

You have two things going for UNEASYsilence: name recognition among its readers (and other blogs), and a brand that sparks interest just based on the name. If you switch to a simpler name, you’d lose some of that unique identity that we’ve all grown to love.

  • rslux

I care more about the content than the name.

  • http://www.clunkclunk.com ClunkClunk

Why not just use “uneasy.com”? It redirects here, so I assume you own the domain. It’s catchy, and not limited to “tech” or any particular category, not to mention, the shorter the domain, the easier it is to remember.

  • Andrew Clark

    UNEASYsilence or im out.

    Ok Ok.
    All joking aside.
    Uneasy silence is just. Home.
I couldn’t imagine it being anything else.

  • Andrew

I really like the name as it is now. It is a perfect descriptor of the website, and it’s a hell of a lot more interesting than UNEASYtech or something. I think you should leave it alone.

  • http://www.saltypirate.com mark h

I say change. Let’s not be sentimental. I have to disagree with Andrew – the name doesn’t really mean anything as is. Maybe if you were a blog dedicated to conspiracy theories.

  • http://digitalzack.blogspot.com azri

What will happen to UNEASYexpo? hehehe

  • http://www.byteme.net.au Jasper

i really like UNEASYsilence, the name is mysterious.

UNEASYtech just sounds like another tech blog, it dosent conger up an image of difference.

keep up the awsome work! :)

  • Ronald Poi

I like UNEASYsilence but i’m ok with change… i liked the idea of UNEASYnews or just UNeasy…

  • Paul

Uneasysilence should stay, their are tech posts in here but not real tech ones discussing the usual new fabrication of the next processor its more light hearted much better to read e.g. Flickr on your desktop. The various other completely non tech related story’s really change the mood and put a smile on your face.

Uneasysilence is a good name its like contraband something which shouldn’t be discussed and its always been Uneasysilence!

  • Lisa

    I dunno.
Honestly, UNEASYsilence is what got me here in the first place. The name.
You are the very FIRST site of this kind that got me to stay.
    I like different.
Change the name from “silence” to “tech” and there goes the differentness of the site.
No longer original, neat, weird, original, new, or fun. Just another site in the endless sites that all report the same news over and over again.

  • Chris

    X3 on just uneasy.com

  • Mac_Tonight

    WEINERface :D

  • http://mykalcave.com Myke

I like uneasysilence.com It sounds good and even looks good. I cant seem to agree with any other name or think of one myself.

    UNEASYSILENCE ALL THE WAY!

  • EuphoricaL

You could keep UneasySilence as the main site encompassing lots of topics. Then have the other domains effectively as subsections of the site. So uneasytech.com would have all the tech articles from uneasysilence, etc.

O, and I’m scared of change as well.

  • SMASH!!!!

EUPHORICAL said everything i was going to say… so this is now my new comment

i see this going about as good as

    michael jackson being white

or even lennon and yoko ono

or led zepplin and air plane

and on the topic of plane crashes when Waylon Jennings told buddy holly that he hoped his plane crashes

ok so maybe i have some weird views… just please dont change it :-/

  • http://www.musmo.com KwangErn Liew

    Nothing beats the original.

  • G

    don’t change the name pls.

  • Mike D

the bears can smell the menstration! honestly though if you’re going to change the name don’t change it to uneasy tech.. uneasy silence is so much better

  • Matt Oakes

Keep it as it is. The name was what drew me to the site in the first place.

  • unspammable

    UNEASY by itself isn’t bad.

  • http://www.jasonblogs.com JasonBlogs

I know better than anyone the desire to change a site’s name. I’ve done it many times, and each time it was like I was starting all over. It’s very hard to bring over the Google juice. Sure you have a well-developed site already, but it’s better to keep adding more value than to change the name. Look at the name I’m stuck with. lol.

  • j2

Yeah, I’d keep the name if I were you. “uneasy tech” just doesn’t have the same ring as “uneasysilence”!

  • emory

Please, for the love of all things Uneasy, keep the name the same! I couldn’t imagine not waking up to my silence :( I’ve been following this site since it *was* small and, well, it’s life family :)

  • GP

I agree with everyone here saying DO NOT change the name, change your logo, change a color scheme, go more web 2.0 …. evolution is good – but the name has to stay.

What’s in a name? with UNEASYsilence it WAS the name that first brought me to your site – it’s like a little secret club of over 1,000,000 of us !!

Keep up the good work …

  • http://dailytechtalk.com Adam Jackson

    AdamJacksonRox.com?

    Sounds good to me.

  • http://www.uneasysilence.com Dan

No, I don’t own UNEASY.com…. Some stupid swatter has it and wants $5,000 for it. Ridiculous.

  • Johansen

Don’t change the name. It is good on several levels of different meanings and connotations. The Uneasysilence in my cube as I break from work for a visit to the site. The Uneasysilence as I wonder why I didn’t think of what ever was just featured etc.

  • jill

    Me no likey change

  • http://fernyb.net fernyb

    No, change. stick with UNEASYsilence!
Of course if you want change the site from a blog to a site or something else but the name just sounds right. It’s killer!

  • http://www.uneasysilence.com Dan

Again, I’m not changing it…. Just thinking about changing it. But it seems that I really shouldn’t even be thinking about it :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/boywonder8503 Anthony

Yeah… I like UNEASYsilence… it just sounds good & is a recognizable name now. It is what it is…. :-)

  • maijc

why not to SILENCEuneasy.com… leaving the jokes aside, as Lisa was saying, the name is what it got me here, there is something about the name (and what could the webpage contains) that make me read my… feedreader daily, just dont change the name please….

  • Michael Curtis

I like UNEASYsilence, just because is sounds kinda cool…

  • http://www.horseshoes-handgrenades.com Stephen

I have always liked UNEASYsilence as a name, and I really don’t think the change is necessary. You’ve established this site using that name and I think it might throw people off to change it. I think you have a good following under the UNEASYsilence banner and you should leave it alone.

    UNEASYsilence rules!

  • http://www.brilliantgeekstogo.com Kostian

Uneasy Silence as others Mentioned is more UNIQUE than the rest of the names.

keep it although i don’t care wat happens.

  • Sean

I’ll toss in one more vote for keeping it UNEASYsilence. It would be that or UNEASY.com, but that’s not worth $5000 to a squatter to get. Anything else behind the name just doesn’t flow nicely.

  • http://scopetech.net Evan

PAY THE WRITERS! Wait, what were we talking about again? :p

I came on to the site because of UNEASYsilence. I don’t think you should change the name.

Seriously, Dan, at least let us out of our cages, please.

  • David

I think UNEASYsilence is a stronger brand name than UNEASYtech. UNEASYtech would be more descriptive but less distinctive than UNEASYsilence. People remember UNEASYsilence because it’s not just another *tech name. As other posters have pointed out, it’s not always just tech that draws us here anyway.

In addition, there is already a lot of goodwill associated with the current name. of course, most of it would carry over due to the loyal following but it’s still something to consider.

  • Roger

I’m piling on to the nearly unanimous agreement that you would be nuts to change the name for the many fine reasons listed.

The vagueness of the name allows you to do what you do well, which is spend time the rest of us don’t have to find the quirkiest news, products, and ideas and put them in one place. Admittedly, “Uneasytech” is even vaguer, since presumably you won’t change content.

I like that the name is off-putting enough that some people won’t ever come here. You’ve got a pre-selected open-minded audience, just like people who go to sites with names ending in “tech” are ANOTHER pre-selected audience. One with pocket protectors.

Don’t make me sign an on-line petition, man.

  • Ryan

UNEASYsilence means quirky news that most mainstream media fails to cover; it means the geeky conversations you generally don’t have with the average Joe; it means knowing anecdotal tid-bits that most can’t share because they aren’t in the know like your readership is.

UNEASYsilence is an outlet to find news on topics that I usually feel ‘uneasy’ talking about with my co-workers. I tend to remain in ‘silence’ because I pretty much know the tech & random stuff I’m interested in doesn’t really interest most. As such UNEASYsilence fits this sites purpose like a glove. UNEASY is to silence just as Captain is to & Tennille — the two are inseparable.

  • Matthew Hart

    Stick with the original!

  • nick

don’t change unless you can get uneasy.com

  • Carlos

One more vote for keeping the original name, UNEASYsilence.

  • John N

    Viva la UNEASYsilence!

  • Jerry

    AppleNews.Com

  • uneasyfan

I vote to keep the UNEASYsilence name. The name is interesting, which brought me here in the first place. Changing it to anything else would be disasterous.

  • http://mavrev.com Matt

If UNEASYsilence would still be the homepage, and these other domains/names be acecss to just that set of news, tech, stuff, news etc., I’d be cool with that I guess.. But I don’t see the point unless you want to get more content up, the homepage on UNEASY now about fills up with the days stories, so that’s not enough, to me, to spread out across 3 or more sites…

But in the end it is your website, and your choice.

  • http://ag-studios.com Masta’ B

    uneasysilence.

Of course it would be great to own Uneasy.com, but $5000 is bit much.

Of the offered ideas, the only one I can handle is uneasynews.com

“stuff” is dim, and “tech” makes it a) too specific, and b) less interesting

UNEASYsilence is a great name, and it’s easy to see most of your readers agree.

  • http://www.donawilson.com Don Wilson

The only name change I’d support is uneasy.com

  • Tensenki

I love you guys, the format, and the name. I beseech you, do not change it.
i would have to change the shortcuts, and I’m pretty lazy. it might take me a week or two and I would miss out on stuff. Please don’t change.

  • Ruddy

I think the first thing that attracted me to the site was the name, I’m almost certain I’d still continue to visit no matter what the name is, yet I feel that UNEASYsilence is right and any other name would just be awkward.

  • Joel

Adding another vote for keeping UNEASYsilence.

  • Adam

Definitely don’t change the name, it’s one of the best things about the site. I had enough problems when the site layout changed and I couldn’t see the full article text from the main site.

  • Wally

The name UNEASYsilence somehow set you apart from the pack. Keep it…

  • http://mavrev.com Matt

    And….UNEASYsilence wins?

  • http://www.brilliantgeekstogo.com Kostian

    slashdot.org

    oh wait… :P

  • Jon

I really like uneasysilence.com It just sounds right to me =)

  • Big Kendian

Hmm.. I like UnEasySilence but I know how it feels when you think you’ve morhped
to a different place and the name is a bit of a vestige of a previous concept.

But I like brainstorming names, so here’s some if you want to go with the tech theme:

    UnEaseOlogy
    QuEasyNet
    QuestionTech
    UnDoneTech
    Confrontechnology /ConfronTech
    DisEasedTech
    Distresstech

  • sebey

no don’t change it it perfect

  • http://awarmgun.net/ Ian Adams

Don’t change it. You’ve got a great name.
