Picking the “Unpickable” Lock

I’m not sure about you guys, but whenever I see a company making a claim that their product X is totally immune to some hazard or another, it just makes me itch to try and prove them wrong. For years, Modeco has been advertising their locks as totally unpickable, and have thus become the lock of choice for high security institutions such as data-centers and government facilities including the White House and the Pentagon. Last week at Defcon (what better place for such a thing to go down), Marc Weber Tobias demonstrated a technique to bypass the mechanism in under a minute using simple tools such as a screwdriver and bump-key. The video above shows an un-trained 12 year old girl picking this king of locks.

Hacking and picking locks have gone hand-in-hand since the beginning of the personal computer revolution, and it’s nice to see the connection is still strong.

nice….. did they show how to bypass code input and biometric locks at defcon as well? or am I behind the times on this one? Personally, I’d just use some thermite….. or C4…….. subtlety isn’t quite my strong point 8Þ
