iPhone Unlocked in HK, the rest of Asialand next? Maybe the World!

Apparently stores across Hong Kong have been able to completely unlock the iPhone for usage on any carrier for $699 US (4GB) / $899 US (8GB) using a Turbo SIM. The displayed mobile shows localization for Chinese language and is on the HK CSL network.

“Unlocking is done using the Turbo SIM method, the shopkeeper loads up the Chinese or Japanese interface and special fonts so the names of Chinese songs appear correctly. Once unlocked all the features can be accessed from the music player to web browser and to making and receiving calls of course”

In addition, EDGE usage was possible and was quite speedy on the HK CSL network:

We tried hk.yahoo.com, www.phonedaily.com, the mobile.163.com and all loaded within half a minute, which indicates that Hong Kong’s EDGE access to be at regualr internet speed. It’s not bad, and also explains that the iPhone might use GPRS to access the internet

I don’t know about the GPRS thing, though I am wondering if we will see iPhones on T-mobile cheapo plans stateside any times soon? Only time will tell.

    looks like the rest of asia will follow :) , if Chinese can crack it than it will be spread across to all east and southeast .

    Posts have been made on Scandinavian forums of people using the V1 SIM card mods and the activation hack successfully use the phones here. Work is currently underway to get specialized characters on the keyboard (we have 29 characters in our alphabet)

    I am already using the unlocked iPhone here in India for the past couple of weeks.
    Although I had to pay $200 for unlocking alone, but unlocking fees will be negligible once the phone gains momentum in the market.
