XM and Sirius to Offer “Pay For What You Want” Radio Service

Just stuffed in the headlines today is this little gem that could single handily give satellite radio the push they need to hit critical mass.

Sirius and XM said on Monday they would offer a subscription package priced 46 percent below current levels, and would also let customers buy packages of their favorite channels, after their proposed merger.

The planned “a la carte” programming would be available beginning within one year following the merger, which the companies hope to complete later this year.

If this does indeed happen, this will help me not pay for the crap that I don’t want with my radio subscription and hopefully spur more compelling programming. Now, if only my cable company would finally do that. Who needs THREE CSPAN’s anyway?!

Guess the real question is Howard or O&A?

“Guess the real question is Howard or O&A?”

    Neither.

Sirius subscriber here, and I love it. The 50 station plan for $6.99 is really perfect for me. I just hope I can keep Howard at that price. The thing that really sucks is you HAVE to buy a new radio. What happens to those people who bought a “lifetime” subscription. The lifetime is based on the particular receiver, not your actual lifetime. Not that I paid $499 for that option, but that would suck if they screwed them over.
