MPAA and RIAA Polluting Torrents With A Corrupt Client

azureus-ziptorrent-mod.jpg

The war between The RIAA and MPAA and Torrent networks have reached a new level. A new client has been created designed to corrupt and slow torrents down to a stand still.

The goal of ZipTorrent is to slow down popular downloads as much as possible. They use hundreds of these clients at the same time and this can potentially bring the average download speed down to zero. Even more so, it is not unlikely that it will record your IP-address in the process so they can send you a copyright infringement notice on top of it.

I have to hand it a little to the RIAA and MPAA for FINALLY leveling technology against technology, instead of cowardly bullying and suing poor children.

Too bad the usage of PeerGuardian can make the impact of this nearly zip. If major seeders decide to block lists of RIAA and MPAA IP’s as they are discovered, then those people can’t latch onto the network and suck the bandwidth out.

Everyone knows that technological wars are unwinable when fighting the people. As soon as these clients hit the p2p networks, they’ll be discovered, though they probably spoof the software identity to something legit eventually. The point is, ziptorrent can’t have more than a short-term effect unless Media Defender is willing to obtain larger and larger lists of IP addresses to attack torrent networks from.

I agree with Alan Rager. The *AA’s infinite money resources are meaningless when confined strictly to the Internet. Major peers and clients will adapt quickly – piracy has always remained one step ahead of the Mega Corps. Even barring the IP blocks mentioned, I’m sure that the popular clients will implement a blocking algorithm in short order. I wonder… could this constitute a “DDOS”? I mean, they’re utilizing multiple machines to spam users of a network to prevent it from working… that sounds an awful like a DDOS.

I think most bittorrent clients check for corrupt packets, no? If one IP keeps feeding bad packets, that IP could be banned. If that feature isn’t already implemented, it will be shortly. Another **AA waste of money that will be passed off to consumers.

Guess they got to TorrentFreak too….

Meh, we’ll beat them. Pirates always win in the movies. If you don’t believe me, Pirate Bay has all three Pirate of the whatever movies up, and they only take about an hour each to torrent. Jack Sparrow always wins.

“Yo, ho, feedle de de, being a pirate is alright to be. You are a pirate!”

    Lazy town is amazing.

Another solution: check for clients labeled “Zip torrent” when torrenting and ban them, taking care to also post them up onto the ban lists on different sites.
