Microsoft and EA Team Up For In-Game Advertising

While in-game advertising is nothing new, Microsoft and Electronic Arts want to take it to the next level thanks to a new deal they’ve made. The deal allows for dynamic advertising to take place in Electronic Arts’ games on the Xbox 360 and PC meaning games like Madden, Skate, Tiger Woods and NASCAR will feature ads that can be changed.

Microsoft purchased the in-game ad company Massive last year for $200 million while in March, Google purchased game ad service Adscape for $23 million.

Imagine racing in Burnout and seeing the billboards featuring a different product each time you were on a track. I have no problem with this as long as it’s unintrusive. Making these ads part of the gaming experience instead of bombarding us with pop-ups is a great idea. Too bad there was no mention of games costing less because of this.

Too bad for Google, who was also up for the adspots with Microsoft. EA is really well connected to Microsoft, so this ad-partnership comes as no surprise. (Check out all the ties at NewsVisual, it’s actually pretty interesting: http://www.newsvisual.com/newsvisual/2007/07/ea-and-microsof.html ). That’s a good point about the games costing less- you should look into making that happen.
