Google Testing New Homepage

image-thumb.png

Check out the Google homepage being tested in Taiwan and in Hong Kong. It adds buttons to the bottom of the page that are animated when you hover over them. I’ve tried it out and I could go for it either way. I like it better than the now deceased Google X. Try it out and tell us what you think. [via]

It all looks pretty good, but from a usability point of view, it seems no good.. Icons should be used for recognition, not decoration..

Those Taiwanese sure do like their flashiness, don’t they?

  • Jon

    the link ‘Original’ is korean.

  • http://scopetech.net Evan

Hmm, well I assume there are different ones for Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong?

Am I the only one who noticed the “Unofficial” label on the translated page, as well as at the bottom?

EDIT: stupid me, I didn’t realize that it was in fact the translation the was unoffical, not the page in general.

Yep, next time I’ll try to be more clear on these things. My apologies.

Although I do like a bit of flair on the internet, I think its going to be hard to beat what google has already. I find the animations unnecessary and given that google is the most used page in the world (don’t quote me on that… unless its true ), I can imagine that they will become really annoying after time. And the page doesn’t validate – but then google pages never do.

I was pretty pissed to see that upper left hand nav links on the homepage, as much as I like cool flashy usable webpages, Google should stick with what they have, its so minimalistic its amazing

Cool stuff. Generally speaking, Asians like these eye-candy stuff.

  • http://scopetech.net Evan

Keith and Brandon – There was no mention of it coming here, I think it’s all about the culture, not to mention that is technically minimal to them, what with their 400 Giga-jillion speed internet connections for pennies a day. Quote me on that, I dare you.

This is actually fairly old, I’m suprised it’s taken this long to get on UNEASY and Downloadsquad. It was on Digg a while back along with all over the Korean web. I had a mirror on my site at one point but it seems to be missing…

    Asians and their eye candy…Sheesh.
