IBM / Lenovo Is NOT Bringing Sexy Back

Seems that Lenovo isn’t bringing sexy back. The $5,000 ThinkPad reserve seems to be nothing more then a leather clad X61. Besides the less then groundbreaking hardware (Centrino Pro Core 2 Duo L7500 processor, WWAN, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD and of course that 12.1-inch screen) the ThinkPad comes with guaranteed on-site support in major cities within four hours. Price tag is still $5,000 but these laptops are being sold “by invitation only.” Hey Lenovo, you can take your invitation and….

The Jun 16th, 2007 posting is inaccurate. I work in Beijing, China where the PC in the photo was designed. The above photo is Lenovo’s Yoga concept PC, which won Germany’s prestigious Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalenprestigious Red Dot Design Award back in Dec. 2005. The ThinkkPad reserve was released to mark the 15th anniversary of the ThinkPad. World famous designer, Richard Sapper, who was the original industrial engineer for IBM’s first PC collaborated with the original ThinkPad engineer Tomoyuki “Tom” Takahashi to create this unique PC. The handmade french leather wrapped PC required a newly created venting system to dissipate heat. Each ThinkPad Reserve’s leather will age and wear differently creating a more personalized device. Beyond the service, the hardware includes an attachable antennae for unparalleled wireless connectivity, and a fully encrypted disc for data protection.
