125 MPG Toyota Prius dances circles around H2′s

That compact car of yours – the standard Toyota Prius – doesn’t look so cool any more does it… A Pennsylvania based corporation has squeezed a few more miles out of the hybrid making the H2 look a lot more frivolous.

The Pennsylvania based Lithium Technology Corporation recently demonstrated a new type of “plug-in” Toyota Prius hybrid car. The new model is based on advanced lithium iron phosphate battery which allows the hybrid car to travel up to a distance of 125 miles per gallon of fuel – making it possibly the most efficient mass-produced car in the world.

Speaking of fuel costs, does someone want to do a little "homework" to find out how much the average gallon of gas was before President Bush took office?

    Here you go…in today’s dollars it looks like about $1.50 a gallon average in the year 2000, compared to around $3.30 today.

    Why are you complaining, thats really really cheap. Compare that to the UK.

    The price of 1 liter at the garage half a mile from me is £0.989.

    That works out to be $1.964 USD per liter

    1 US Gallon is 3.785 liters.

    Therefore 1 gallon cost $7.43374 USD in the UK.

    That 44.39% higher if my maths work out correctly.

    Note this isnt based on a national average petrol price just the one nearest to be, however it seams to be fairly average. Prices are lower nearer to london but higher further away from me. So being in cheshire but me in a happy middle.

    How can people in the US complain?

    Adjusted for inflation, we’re paying the same for gas that we did 30 years ago.

    I love the idea of hybrids. The costs of hybrids needs to come down significantly before it would make my shopping list, and the government needs to subsidize these cars more than they are now IF they truly want less dependence on foreign oil.

    It seems like the Prius and Insight are the only hybrids that get significantly higher gas mileage. I love Ford, but the Escape hybrid is hardly worth considering at a weak 36/31 mpg compared to the standard version of 29/24 mpg.

    Hybrids are awesome, but the Prius is the ugliest car ever seen IMO. I want that kinda gas milage, but from some other car.

    I love the Prius (and I happen to like how it looks). I’d still like it for all the high tech goodies even if it didn’t get such great mileage. I really love the pushbutton start and smart key system. I don’t even have to take the ‘key’ out of my pocket. I just touch the door to unlock it and press the start button and it’s ready to drive. When you start it, you don’t hear any engine noise, just the ‘ready’ indicator. I love the quiet smooth drive with no transmission shifting jolts. I also like the backup camera, so I can see if any pets or toddlers wander behind it.

    Also ethanol costs more energy to produce then the end product gives us, and the tractors and such used to make it use gas or disel. I’m not positive but i think bio-disel is the way to go or hydrogen cars, but thats not gonna happen for a while

    Matt, I agree. Petrol prices are soaring in the UK, in some Tesco ones I’ve seen £1 :/ Not good.
    People in the US actually don’t have a right to complain about petrol (or as they would put it, gas) prices when they look at us Brits ;)
