College students racking up debt, Universities to blame?

All major Universities across the country have "special" deals creditors which give schools a commission / cut of new sign-ups. Are schools to blame for students racking up debt as quickly as they do? Where you drawn towards credit cards during college?

I don’t know if they are to blame, but they definitely do not help. At my undergrad (which was a very small college) we would give the occasional CC company giving something for signing up. Here at a much larger university, especially when the weather is nice, they are lots of companies trying to rope people into signing up. You also get plenty of “just sign up then cancel the card” to get the free shirt but I doubt that many do that. I think that the school could easily say “No, you can’t push your stuff here at any price”. However, in the end, it is still the student using the card and they have to bear the responsibility.

Seriously, nobody is forcing these students into GETTING the cards and then TO USE THEM to go into DEBT. It’s just a vehicle that the student is driving. If anything, what should be done is simple financial management courses. We’re forced to take “black people are better than white people” courses at all public universities, why not force something USEFUL?

I gotta sympathize with this. When I first started school they definitely had people on campus trying to get the students to sign up for credit cards.

It is the students choice but most students are going to apply. Its tempting. Money is tight especially living on campus and when you need things you needs things.

And to know that the school gets a cut of the profit? That just puts a completely different twist on the situation. I’m not saying the universities are completely to blame but they shouldn’t be putting students in that situation.

Ad when you sign up for one, you’re going to get offers from them all. I’m only twenty and I get 2-3 credit card offers a day in the mail. I already have two

as a sophomore with about $400 in debt, i can definitely see that there’s pressure coming from the CC companies for even more. That debt is on one (my only) credit card, and it’s definitely pulled me out of jams before when money is tight. we could try our hardest to find only one group to blame – the students, the universities, the companies themselves – but the fact of the matter is that nobody’s blameless in a scenario like this. students have to be personally responsible and the CC companies have to maintain some kind of ethical boundaries in order to fix the problem at hand, if one group acts irresponisbly it’s all shot to hell again.

Thank god I am going to an Art School instead of a University. Everyone that I know at my college has Debit/Check Cards.

well we always try to find someone else to blame. so in this case we are trying to figure out who to blame.

I wouldnt blame credit card companies, they are in business to get you in debt and then collect interest on it. that is how they make their money. i mean come on a sales person rapes you when you buy a car so he can have a living.

the blame goes partially to university for allowing the cc companies to come in and get the students. school is for studying, learning new things not for signing up for crap you dont need.

most of the blame goes to students. first of all we have to realize there is nothing free in this world. if you get it now, you will end up paying for it later. another thing, why use the money you dont have. the way you use your card shows how smart you are. credit cards can be really helpful if you use them right.

i charged all my school fees on my discover card, then collected 1% back on all my fees (5% during a special promotion in summer). and i made sure i paid the full balance before the due date.

now i could’ve been going out buying stuff i dont need, or stuff ill use for few times and wont use it again, but i kno i dont have the money to pay for it.

95% blame goes to students, and 5% to uni.

    just my .02
