dell-axim-x51v-300×425.gif Chris at Mobility Site pointed out the the Dell Axim has bit the dust, marking Dell’s exit from the PocketPC market, which they entered in late 2002.

Their focus at the time was to push down the costs of expensive handhelds, and Dell experienced some success but as smartphones started to take over the handhelds sales slumped. Even though there is rumors about the Dell Smartphone, Chris is quick to point out that those rumors have zero substance.

Poor Axim. While this news isn’t unexpected (Chris has been saying the doom was eminent), it is truly sad. I was hoping that they’d hold out and push a WM6 update, but I doubt that will happen now. Oh well, maybe I can still sell my Axim to dad in a few months.

While Dell hasn’t released a new Axim in nearly 2 years, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better standalone PDA. The top of the line X51v and X50v series units have 624MHz processors, VGA screens, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

And unlike Smartphone/PDAs, you got all of that for a one-time price of $300-$400. No need to buy an expensive monthly data plan on top of your home internet access just to use the device you’ve already paid for.

Sure, I guess you COULD buy a Blackjack or a Treo without activating the phone service, but the truth is the newer devices are designed to be phones, not personal digital assistants/handheld computers.

yea I had the compaq version of essentially the same thing… I gave it away.

The neat part about it was that if you had a wifi card and skype, you could turn it upside (since the speaker was at the bottom, mic at the top) and have a phone ;)
