VMWare Releases Beta 2 of Fusion with Limited 3D Acceleration

Right after Parallels came out with their new and improved 2.5 update, VM Ware has upped the ante with Beta two which has limited 3D Acceleration support.

Other Changes include:

  • Experimental 3-D graphics support — Play a selection of DirectX 8.1 games in Windows XP Service Pack 2 virtual machines.
  • Snapshot feature — Roll back your virtual machine to a known good state when something goes wrong in your virtual machine—for example, when your virtual machine picks up a virus, or when a software upgrade causes problems.
  • Improved networking — Automatically bridge to the computer’s primary network interface.
    Full support for Airport wireless networking, including virtual machines behind a NAT firewall and bridged to the local Airport network.
  • Support for up to ten virtual network interfaces
  • Improved Microsoft Vista support — Support for Microsoft Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions.
  • Complete VMware Tools support for Microsoft Vista including copy/paste, dragging and dropping files, shared folders, and screen resizing.
  • Improved hardware editor — Add additional virtual hard drives to a virtual machine for needed capacity.
  • View the physical computer’s battery status in the virtual machine.
  • Improved full screen mode — Support for plugging and unplugging displays while virtual machines are in full screen mode.
  • Experimental support for Mac OS X Leopard — You can now install and run VMware Fusion on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Support is experimental because Mac OS X 10.5 is not yet released. Fusion will support the release version of OS X 10.5 in the final VMware Fusion release.

    I wanted to try this latest beta release with Vista but try as I might, I couldn’t get the damn thing to boot off of the Vista disk. Jumped through various loops hoping to get it to work and it just doesn’t. The only real benefit of VMWare that I see over Parallels is support for multiple cores. Unless I’m mistaken? Does Parallels provide that type of support?

    I thought parallel’s said that multiple core support as one of the things that they were saying was up and coming. I have to be honest though, after using Visual Studio 2005 via parallels on my mbp c2d, it is so much speedier than my windows box at work. I can only imagine that if I’m able to dedicate both cores to parallels that it will scream. i just wonder how osx will work if i’m using both cores for windows in parallels. anyway, i think if parallels gets the quick snapshot feature and of course the 3d accelleration support that it will take a lot to overtake them in the mac virtualization space.

    can u try to make VMware fusion work on a pc cause i have ubuntu lunux and i would like to run beryl on it and in the normal VMware workstaion it does not work when i click beryl manger the virtual PC would restart so im trying to get on google , live and other seach engines and i really like linux but i have windows vista ultimate with NIVDIA 6150 and i really want to try it so……….. does beryl work on it?
