Hack The AppleTV And Get Locked Out

Seems that Apple is striking back against AppleTV Hackers

Several of us over in the Awkward TV IRC(l0rdr0ck, myself, and others) have had our Mod’d Apple TV’s played with over night(SSH/VNC disabled), our guess is apple has started to fight back the mod’d Apple TV’s. This is a warning to all of you to block your Apple TV from the internet by going into your routers settings and denying it internet access! This does mean Apple may have the power to update your Apple TV, without you knowing it!

Apple, WHY?! You could sell tons more of these little boxes if you allow developers to come up with all neat little hacks.

    Actually, if you read the comments, most people are thinking that it’s some sort of cron job that periodically repairs what looks like damage.

    I suspect someone in the next week or so will figure out what it uses to determine a “damaged” file and find a way to mark the changes as proper.

    Someone else will probably find a way to disable the auto-repairs. And then scream about lousy quality control if problems slip in.

    It’s an easy answer as to why Apple doesn’t want you fooling around… when the Apple TV 2.0 comes out with 1 new feature, they want to force you to buy it instead of download something from the internet for free.

    I’m holding out for XMBC to be ported so that none of these surprises arise.

    Ironic that Apple would be locking out some of its hacked units whereas Apple started out as a hack from two lads in a garage..

    I’m sure this is nothing. Apple has never done any kind of invasive piracy “protection” before, a la Microsoft.

    Jobs seems to understand that no piracy protection can possibly be effective, and its better to just trust your customer.

    I think this is probably more along the lines of automated cron jobs running cleanup/permissions repair. Someone needs to look into what the AppleTV does for self maintenance before pointing the finger at apple. As tom said, Apple’s never been the kind to do what everyone’s accusing them of.
