T-Mobile Sayz “No Third Party Apps For You!”

GearLog is reporting that T-Mobile has recently changed their terms of service to ban the use of third party apps, regardless if the phone has an appropriate data plan and operating system.

That means no Skype on your PPC phone, no GoogleMaps or OperaMini.

T-Mobile cites “security” as the reason for the lock down, and will terminate contracts on accounts they suspect of using non approved apps.

    Yay, don’t you love those cell companies (company? AT&T seems to own nearly all of the companies now, anyway). They milk you for every bit of money that they can, leaving their pockets lined and the consumers used.

    Im a T-mobile user so this is disappointing to me. What ever happened to doing everything possible to please the customer? Now its all about restricting them…

    Im now starting to wonder if I should have gone with umm maybe cingular?

    And after reading through the comments made on that page, someone made a good point.

    The majority of people who use T-mobile arent going to care about this change. Most people just want a phone that works and they dont have to worry about. The company isnt going to cater to users who are this in depth with their phones as they are not the norm. They figure they will either upgrade to PDAs or invest in an unlocked phone.

    But for me this is making the iPhone just that much more appealing.

    But isn’t the iPhone not letting 3rd party apps either? I don’t think they will restrict web apps however.

    Does this allow you to use the TOS ‘loophole’ to get out of your contract and not pay the $200 termination fee? I’ve been thinking of changing from T-Mobile to something else recently.

    I agree with Hitsuji. Thats how you would get out. Same kinda out for Verizon, use 10GB of data in two months and they’ll drop you.

    Well, i’m already using Opera and Google Maps on an unlocked Audiovox Smartphone with no issues and have been for quite a while now (years).

    With the growing number of web-based mobile apps out there, like Tappity (www.tappity.com) and Netvibes2Go (m.netvibes.com), it’s not going to matter that T-Mobile won’t let you install these 3rd party apps. You’ll be able to access them via any phone, even when you switch providers.
