Sony embraces the the iPod and markets iPod dock

Sony iPod dockNothing says "I bow down before you" like a competitor manufacturing and marketing accessories for the enemy. Sony is now selling an MP3 dock created to answer the needs of iPod owners.

The CPF-IP001 is a stylish , two-piece dock and stereo set for perhaps the most famous non-satellite gadget in the world. The two main speakers give you a respectable 5 watts of sound, and the subwoofer, despite hanging out by itself a cord’s throw away from the dock, gives you 15 watts of backing vocals.

It’s one pricey unit at $250US retail. A smart move on Sony’s part as their MP3 line is.. well, obviously doesn’t enjoy the customer base that I’m sure execs would have hoped for.

It is a smart move on Sony’s part but I would never invest in one of these docks. Sound quality not up to par.

If you have a decent home stereo, Apple’s airport express is a much smarter purchase. Stream your iTunes wirelessly through your home sound system.

20W of sound is nothing to get excited over. And definitely not worth $250.

For that kind of price, you could get something more portable, more hi-fi, or both. Sony has lagged quite a bit in portable audio ever since CD players got phased out by mp3 players, though, so it’s not surprising that even this iPod dock is so underwhelming.

Typical Sony prices. They tend to forget that not everyone is super wealthy.
