NY Senator wants to ban iPods from Crosswalks

Funny stuff. Maybe the senator should recommend banning blinking while crossing the street? Might as well if the guy is trying to ban iPods from being used in Crosswalks (warning FOX pop-up).

There are laws on the books to stop jaywalking, but if one New York state senator gets his way, it will soon be illegal to bop along to your iPod while crossing the street.

Sen. Carl Kruger will propose a bill that would ban using an iPod — and any other electronic device that is a distraction — while crossing traffic, WCBS-TV reported Wednesday.

“We’re talking about people walking sort of tuned in and in the process of being tuned in, tuned out,” Kruger, a Democrat, told WCBS-TV. “Tuned out to the world around them. They’re walking into speeding cars. They’re walking into buses. They’re walking into one another and it’s creating a number of fatalities that have been documented right here in the city.”

Does anyone else find this humorously stupid? I can understand, say, banning text messaging while driving. But banning iPod usage in Crosswalks? How would something like this be enforced? Police officers randomly pulling earphones from ears to see if pedestrians are listening to music while crossing?

    Honestly I do not think this is stupid what-so-ever. There are endless number of times i have to literally yell at somebody to get to the side so I can pass. I often find people walk slower and not in a straight line while walking, but rather drift from one side to practically the other.

    We seriously need to stop banning anything that has randomly killed someone. For instance, blinds in a babies bedroom, if placed to close to the crib are a choking hazard because the cord can wrap around the babies head. By the logic of of making everything hazardous unlawful, these style of blinds should be banned from rooms where children sleep.

    There is no way to make idiocy unlawful, our legislators need to learn that and focus on our national debt or maybe the war in Iraq. Where people die crossing the street because someone sets off a IED.

    I have a VERY easy solution to the problem: Ban cars and busses. They surely killed more people then iPods did.

    Now all I need is a Senator (and to be in America obviously)

    I agree with Kevin.

    I don’t think people need laws to tell them what to do for their own good. I live in Colorado and there aren’t laws requiring people who ride motorcycles to wear a helmet. Some people think there should be. But again… no one needs a law to tell them that wearing a helmet while traveling unrestrained at high speeds is a good idea.

    So if someone listening to an iPod while crossing the street doesn’t look both ways and ends up paying for it… well, sorry.

    they should ban cross walks…. instead it should be cross dances… I mean it takes some serious effort to dance as opposed to walk… not to mention you’d def. know a cross dance (walk) was coming because you’d start planning your moves in advance…

    if that doesn’t work I would just ban lithium ion batteries … and if that still fails to curb this crazy tendency I’d suggest hanging up huge LED mooninites all over the place thus shutting down entire cities … without cars moving… you can’t hit anything

    They will get it any thing to put more money in the city pocket will apressing the people. just make up more dumb laws so they can slap a 2k fine on there and line there pockets more.

    Kind of like the you cant roller blade or bike in the street or on sidewalk. So more or less if you are seen with bike or roller blades you can be fined unless you are in a park.

    That is a real law in many city’s in Ohio. But then this is the same places where walk more then 3 in a group with out city written consent is in sighting a riot.

    That moronic Senator should be focusing more on Auto drivers who have cellphones in one hand and the drivers wheel in the other . That should be the focal point , not a person using the crosswalk with an MP3 player on . Let’s get real , that’s why there are traffic lights .
