MediaFork public beta released – Handbrake updated for video enthusiasts

MediaFork, an “updated” rendition of every Mac OS X users favorite video ripping utility Handbrake, is now available in the form of a public beta. Known as a GPL’d multiplatform multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper / converter, the utility is now available for Apple, Linux, and Windows users.

  • Updated libraries (meaning better quality, hopefully fewer bugs, and increased speeds)
  • iPod 5.5G support
  • Revamped graphical interface (Mac OS X)
  • Anamorphic encoding with pixel aspect ratio
  • Brighter color reproduction in QuickTime
  • Lists disks by DVD name instead of by drive name (Mac OS X)
  • Titles output movies based on the DVD name (Mac OS X)
  • 32Khz audio output
  • Constant rate factor encoding with x264
  • New preference item to turn deinterlacing on by default (Mac OS X)
  • New preference item to select the default audio language (Mac OS X)

Great news for any video enthusiasts who actively backup their video collections converting them for playback on the computer or for streaming throughout the household.

    Just in time for the new Apple TV release (although I won’t be getting one).
    Now I can rip movies that were sitting as Isos on my computer to a more space friendly format.

    Get to converting! I loved Handbrake – and now Mediafork – for the option to create a queue of movies to convert throughout the day while I was out rather than doing one at a time.

    Does anyone have another mirror? Or a copy compressed in another method? For some reason, BOMArchiveHelper doesn’t like the .bz file, and even though TheUnarchiver can decompress it, the .dmg won’t mount for me. :(

    Aha, figured it out. It seems that the file downloads as a .bz2 file, but renaming it to .dmg and then mounting works. Hopefully it’ll be fixed on their end soon.
