Disable the Dashboard in MacOS X

zz4f5fa944.jpg

Dashboard in Mac OSX is a great program, but some people have preformance issues with it on older macs, some have no use for it, and others just don’t like it.

The Enable/Disable Dashboard Utiity is a set of icons placed on your desktop (or anywhere else) that allows you to completely disable Dashboard and enable it again. When the “Disable Dashboard” icon is clicked, Dashboard is shut down, and it cannot be relaunched by an accidental click of the Dashboard icon on the dock, or by pressing F12. Dashboard is easily enabled again by clicking the “Enable Dashboard” icon.

Another good app is “Disable Tiger Features” which also gets rid of Spotlight as well as Dashboard.

Here is the leet way to make this happen

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

    Make Dashboard come back

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO

You have to restart the Dock to have this take effect

    killall Dock

I’ve never understood the need for Dashboard disablers. Why don’t you just set up your Dashboard preferences so that there’s no way to invoke it? That is, make it so there’s no hot key and no hot corners. Voilà, you’ve disabled dashboard, with no need for an extra utility.
