WSJ Online posts about Cingular & Apple partnership

Is this enough to extinguish the Apple “phone” rumors? The Wall Street Journal posted an announcement that Cingular is well aware of an Apple handset and prepared to announce availability as early as Tuesday morning.

Cingular Wireless is expected to provide wireless service for a new Apple Computer Inc. cellphone, people familiar with the situation say.

The launch of the new phone and service is expected to be announced as early as Tuesday, these people say.

The new product could give Apple access to the huge wireless business, in which nearly a billion handsets are shipped every year, dwarfing the nearly 70 million iPods Apple has sold over the past five years.

Is it time to rethink whether or not your current non-Cingular carrier deserves your loyalty? If the WSJ comes out and claims that the news is legit, it has to be right?

    If it’s on Cingular, there must be a way to unlock it for T-Mobile, right? Right? I can’t get out of my T-Mo contract at the moment, but I am so looking forward to this phone.

    I’m sure that if it was to come out on Cingular, there would be ways to get it unlocked. Tmobile definitely needs to get in on these deals as their handset offering is… How should I say this? Shite? Seriously, there was a point a long time ago when Tmobile used to get all the “cool” handsets. Now they’re just lagging.

    If this does stay as a GSM variant, we’ll definitely be able to get our hands on unlocked versions – even if we do have to go overseas. Getting the data settings right will be the real trick. Maybe Apple decided to go with Cingular because of their upcoming HSDPA…

    Cingular HSDPA… When that’s released people will change their minds. Maybe the US will finally catch up to our international neighbors across the pond(s).

    What are you talking about? I have a HSDPA phone that I use everyday on Cingular (Samsung Blackjack)… The future that you speak of is now.

    Not across the nation it’s not. Most major cities, but not the entire nation.
