Woman dies after holding pee for Wii

An unfortunate death for a California woman who attempted to drink as much water as possible without relieving herself. Proves the point that water intoxication is definitely something that can take your life. The lengths that parents will go in order to win a Wii console for their children.

A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

Check out the Wikipedia entry on water intoxication – also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning (kind of reminds me of X-Men). Water intoxication is a “disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water”.

Additional fatal example of water poisoning involving a Cal State student killed during a fraternity hazing including massive amounts of water consumption & calisthenics.

    Typical crap contest by a media-whorish radio station’s morning show. Things like this honestly was one of the reasons I stopped listening to KDND in the first place.

    Sad story. Mother of three only makes it worse.

    I also find this disturbing. The contest is stupid, its almost guaranteed for disaster. The fact that they didn’t list any of the signs of hyperhydration makes them liable. Its just sad none of her friends or coworkers realized she should have gone to the hospital rather than home. Its uncommon and difficult to die from hyperhydration under most circumstances, but this contest almost guaranteed it.

    Why hilarious? It is almost certainly too late for a person to know when their body is about to shut down due to hyperhydration. Aside from the headaches or lightheadedness, it’s difficult to foresee. Obviously the radio station did not know the risks involved with the contest that was being held.

    Come on folks, join us all back in reality on planet Earth. You and I both know you have held your damn pee for a hot minute before and never knew a damn thing about Hyperhydration. And the exact same applies to the radio station. Obviously if this was a killer of more than 1 person every 10 yrs. they would probably tried a different contest for the Wii.

    It does happen to more than one person every 10 years, if you’d finished the article at wikipedia. Common sense says if you drink even a half gallon of water all at once, it’s probably not good for your body. The radio show should have known this. They are certainly liable if they took no steps to research effects of a massive intake of water and warn contestants of them. No normal person would know drinking a gallon of water will kill you, which is exactly why it was the responsibility of the establishment holdling the contest to know that information.
