The XBox 360 Reigns Supreme During the Holidays

Considering what a HUGE flop the PS3 was (Sony had a very rough 2006), the XBox 360 outsold not only them but also the wildly popular Nintendo Wii.

According to research firm NPD Microsoft sold two million Xbox 360 consoles in the USA between the beginning of November and Christmas Day. Over the same period Nintendo sold 1.8 million Wii consoles.

Sony lagged behind with around 750,000 PlayStation 3 units, but that’s not a bad figure considering the supply problems the console has experienced.

Wonder if that was due to the lack of Nintendo Wii consoles, or if people really preferred the XBox 360?

Considering that EVERY SINGLE WII was sold, id have to say it was lack of hardware.

360′s are still piled 5 high by 10 wide at every retailer ive been to. I can only imagine half of them that were sold were parents going to buy Wii’s or PS3′s and settling on the only thing in stock. I personally saw that happen a dozen times atleast while doing some Xmas shopping.

Hmm, don’t put away your wallet yet is my stance. With time and money, anything can happen and I feel that Sony will certainly pull sales in 2007 and 2008 when the console really develops. Heck, I’m willing to bet it’ll be the top system by 2008.

There are a few advantages Sony has to help spring sales in the next couple years. High definition televisions are finally becoming affordable meaning more middle class families will have Plasma and LCD technology in their livingroom. These families (or their kids) will probably want the latest in high definition gaming, and PS3 will fill that void.

Blu-Ray is the preferred choice of a good percentage of the movie production companies already and rest have not settled on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray yet. So far the Blu-Ray format has a couple things going for it: almost a million Blu-Ray playing PS3s already sit on livingroom shelves, and it is the first HD video format available to customers, so it’s seed has been planted. With Blu-Ray most likely becoming the format standard for 2007 and 2008, Sony has yet another reason for shoppers to pick up their black box.

Sony, on top of the reasons already listed, is a huge, multi-billion dollar company. Solid advertising campaigns and a few must have games will keep sales strong in the next couple years.

So be it that it may, Sony’s PS3 isnt the breadwinner right now. Give it some time to prove itself and you may be wanting one yourself by next Christmas!

Every single store I went to today (6+) had multiple PS3′s sitting around, very sad.

“I can only imagine half of them that were sold were parents going to buy Wii’s or PS3’s and settling on the only thing in stock.”

I can assure you that the kids would rather have a real gaming system, like the 360 =)

I’m with Dan, today I still saw ps3s and 360s on the shelves, but no Wiis. The demand for Wiis is so great that most ***cough*all*cough*** retailers are cleared out of the wii the same day they they’re restocked.

Wes brings an interesting point about the HD-dvd and Blu-ray, but I have to think back to the VHS and Beta wars. Back then there was no other medium which did what either of these tape formats did. Today, with regular DVDs being very clear I don’t foresee HD-DVD or BluRay taking off very quickly. I’d even wager that these two formats will be replaced by the next technology, even before they get entrenched.

The PS3 is imaginary and not real? The wii doesnt exist? Im sick of fanboy reactions like that.

Wes, I’m missing some of your reasoning. Familys want to take advantage of their new Hi def tv’s? How does that exclude the Xbox 360? a Million Blue Ray players? how many of those are actually being used tho? It ain’t optional, whereas every HD DVD box Microsoft sells is for that purpose alone and $200 is cheap. As for Sony being a big company, well you have got me there, compared to a poky little company like Microsoft, I don’t know how MS will keep up…LOL. Blu ray is only the standard for Sony media product and that battle is a long way from being beat. MS is also doing some clever things, I bought my sons XBOX 360 with a $100 rebate, the extra wireless controllers for $20 each and the HDDVD player for $150 all on sale, so a fully loaded setup with 4 controllers and HD player was $510 …Not bad when compaired to the PS3 price and the very obvious lack of any really distinct improvement over the 360.
