David Beckham is coming stateside

Will this pump new life into the US Soccer program? David Beckham, ex-Real Madrid uber soccer player David Beckham is coming stateside to join the Los Angeles Galaxy (5-year contract).

The 31-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation since manager Fabio Capello arrived at the Bernabeu – the move is sure to be seen as one last big pay day for one of world sport’s biggest names and mark the end of his England career.

Beckham, who has not represented his country since Steve McClaren succeeded Sven-Goran Eriksson as boss, can look forward to picking up around $250 million ($128 million) over the next five years.

Can you hear it now? High school hearts fluttering all across the nation as David Beckham makes the transition to play for the MLS? I don’t watch soccer, but I can guarantee that games making prime-time news will be a regular occurrence from here on out. Thanks Syl.

    I’m glad he’s coming so it draws more attention to the sport, I just hope it doesn’t become a gimmick. I love soccer, love watching it and I always love to watch great players. Beckam certainly is a great player, overrated yes, but still great.

    Regardless of Beckham’s skill level, since he’s well known, he’ll sell seats anywhere the Galaxy plays. That is a very good thing for the MLS, and North American football in general (North American because Toronto FC starts this season – although Montreal should have been given a team way before Toronto).

    Haters. He is one of the best dead ball (free-kick) specialists in the game still. And any English supporters who want to knock him all I have to say is where were the others this summer? He was England’s best player this summer and the only scorer. He hasn’t done anything this year for Madrid because they haven’t played him. He has one of the best crosses in the game today (if only England could have a proper finisher that didn’t do the robot they could have had more than the lone Beckham goal). His is damn near point perfect.

    All europeans like to get high and mighty about football (I know, I’m one of them, but have since relocated to N. America). All I can add is this was one hell of a ballsy move. He gave up the champions league to push a game that’s overlooked in this continent. I look forward to watching him deliver against Toronto FC.
